Not you or your daughter or son, but when, generally should people become sexually active?

If someone would like to do the research on avearge US age at loss of virginity, I'll copy it into this post. I'm not gonna do that at work :)

***in response to some of the posts below:

The question would be much better phrased as:
"People shouldn't be sexually active before what age?"

...and

If you can't figure out what I mean by sexually active and have to ask for clarification, you shouldn't be answering this poll.

Should? I'd say 18.

But usually it's much earlier. Girls these days are total sluts, at least from my experience.

correlation is not causation. All you can determine from that limited sample is that YOU sleep with sluts :p

I did a quick google search and the summaries showed the average age of virginity loss was somewhere around 17.

Ideally, when they are mature and responsible enough to care for the inevitable off-spring financially and otherwise.

But, we know that will never happen.

Should? Whenever they want to at 16 or older. Although, I'm not too keen on 16 year old girls sleeping with 40 year old men.

I would say when they're mature enough to fully understand the risks and consequences and handle the decision.

it is different for everyone. some might be mature enough at 16, others might not be (emotionally) mature until 19. it just depends.
also, i feel that it makes a difference if the person is in a long term realtionship as well.

<NAMBLA> SEVEN! </NAMBLA>

Seriously, it depends on the persons maturity. Some people will never be ready (e.g. mentally handicapped) and some people will be ready at 14.

That's terribly enlightened of you. For the benefit of the viewing public, why don't you make a generalization about when that should occur in your estimation for the typical individual.

Let me ask this: as a parent, would you rather your child be having normal sex, or be participating in this technical virgin BS (e.g. everything but vaginal intercourse, including oral and anal)

There is no "should". It shouldn't be "forced" on you. I guess when you are ready after the age of 18.

Agreed. To late to change it now though.

Ideally, for me, when i get married (for religious regions)

Although i must admit women/sex have been on my mind since 13

I believe it is called self control. Having sex before your are ready to accept the potential consequences ie disease, children should not be acceptable.

I'm not sure I understand your sardonic tone.

At the earliest I would say 16, but it varies from individual to individual.

Why 18? What is so magical about that number? You are an adult now? My 16 y/o sister-in-law is more of an adult than her 26 y/o sister.

In some ancient civilizations, children were getting married at 10-12....why is 18 so damn important?

I thought you could edit polls.

I know people in their 30s that wouldn't be able to handle children....

I think participation in that type of rationalization is a psychological dodge. Frank conversations with children regarding sex should eliminate it.

In short they should be having sex if they want to have sex for their own benefit (and if it is a safe option) and not trying to preserve their virginity or keep up with the popular kids or whatever...
