They say to inhale and then slowly exhale and when the breath is completely gone, slowly squeeze the trigger (you should not actually be breathing when the gun fires). The gun should almost be a surprise when it goes off. That's what I've always been told.
Actually, what i do, and what was taught to me by both my father and my drill instructers is to breath in deeply, exhale, and squeeze the trigger. Do NOT hold your breath, or squeeze the trigger after inhaling, your heart is beating faster after you inhale, and slower after you exhale.
When you get to be Zen Master like Jerry Barnhart or Rob Lathem you can breathe normally albiet very controlled while shooting mag after mag as quickly as you can into your target from 15 yards off-handed. This level requires...oh...about 50,000 rounds fired over several years of training and practice. haha
