When running game - corrupted video - Why?

After the computer is turned on and programs have been running (but finished and closed), eg, ms Word, media center TV, etc. and I try to run a game (Splinter Cell or Prince of Persia WW) the video from the time it starts up is corrupted - in a shattered / jagged pattern (top 1/4 of the screen) and the game won't run properly. However, when I run the game as the first program it runs fine. Why is it doing this? How do I fix it? Is it a bug or faulty card? Do I have adjust settings?

This is an interesting problem. I've never heard if anything like this. Have you tweaked your BIOS setting at all, especially having to do with your RAM? I agree with Screwface. You deserve a bump for this one. 😉

Sounds like a software/driver problem to me. Try disabling various graphics options, like AF/AA, different resolutions, see if that helps.

Interesting problem. At least it will run it as the first app, so there is hope. Evidently thereis a driver corruption because it is not properly ID'ing a game app.

I would install the chipset gart driver, DX9c, then your video card drivers in that order. If you are installing the same video card driver, I would just install over your previous install. If you plan on using a new driver set, I would go thru the normal removal, boot into safe mode and use Driver Cleaner3 to remove all old nv video card drivers before installing your new set.

So, it's good to know it's not suppose to do that no matter what programs ran prior to opening the game. If the game runs fine when running as the first app does that mean it's not a component (hardware) problem?

Nobody has experienced this? Can all of you run your games at any time and it runs fine?

I haven't changed anything in BIOS including Ram.

I hope you have changed some items in bios that affect/control video, because that could be your problem.

What should I have changed? Can you take me through step by step? I'm a nOOb.

I have to admit, I have never set up a Motherboard with PCI-e, only AGP, but some of these item should/might apply.

Initiate First display device: PCI-e (if you are asked to choose between PCI or PCI-e)

Aperture/Frame buffer size: 128mb (or whatever amount of ram your video card actually has)

Shadow video bios: Dissabled

Vga pallet snoop: Dissabled

PCI-e 16x support: Enable

Just a few, and like I say, not sure about a PCI-e board 🙂

Is it imperitive that I use Driver Cleaner 3? Is the standard remove program through Windows not be sufficient?

I think what I may have done was installed the NVIDIA driver 66.93 for Windows XP instead of the MCE version. I was originally going to go with Windows XP (non-MCE). Do you think installing the correct version will solve my problems? Will try tonight.

You should definately use the driver recommended for your OS. That could be the problem. And yes, I would still use driver cleaner, but you could give it a go with-out it and see if it works.

Also, there are newer drivers available than 66.93, I would use one of those myself. New drivers sometimes are written to cure problems like yours 🙂

Perhaps the latest 5.2. Are you getting weird artifacts or shaped on the desktop or outside of games? If that is the case you probably have a defective card. If you see weird shapes and colours in the BIOS then it's definitely your video card.

I think you are running with Nvidia hardware, right?

If so, the earliest driver revision I have been recommending is 67.03. These are still considered Beta, but I used them for several months with no issues.

They are reported to fix graphics corruption.

Look to the Nvidia NZone website under Downloads. You should see a link to Beta drivers.

I just uninstalled the non-MCE 66.93 driver and installed the MCE 66.93 driver but I lost sound, PCI bridge, controller (if I can remember correctly). Why is this? How do I reinstall these components?

Well this is crazy, but my problem sounds a lot like yours, except I can NEVER run a game and it tears up my whole screen. Does it look like THIS?

Our setups are almost exactly the same too:

A64 3200+ (Winchester)
DFI Ultra-D
Leadtek PX6600 GT TDH PCIE
1 GB (2x512) Corsair Value RAM

Coincidence? I doubt it...

Bonesdad, my screen isn't as bad as yours. Mine is more like a 2 inch jagged bar towards the top of the screen but the rest of the screen is visible. Have you tried any other drivers? Are you still having this problem?

YES, I am still having the problem... I just now got an RMA from ZZF. I'm afraid that it might be some problem with the motherboard or memory. I wish I had another (different) board to try it out on. I DID try a stick of PC3200 Buffalo Ram, and got the same results, so I'm less inclined to believe it is RAM associated.

I tried the 66.39 and the 71.84, with the exact same result. I will probably try the 63.07 just to be sure. I have no other problems with the card, "normal" (non-game) use is just fine.

I tried the Standalone kit, no difference for my card...maybe for yours tho? I also tried a diff stick of ram, no effect and a diff PSU, no effect.

I spoke with Leadtek tech support, they think it is a bad card in my case (so to speak). I will RMA it to ZZF, cuz I hear Leadtek is reallllly slow with their RMAs.

This build has been nothing but trouble.

I installed 66.76 and the initial video problem in Prince of Persia Warrior Within has disappeared but a new problem in Splinter Cell has surfaced. I can open and play the game without problem (it seems) but when I go to exit the game (ESC - Quit - Save - Single Player Screen - Back to Main Menu) the computer restarts. I tested it a few times and everytime I click on Back to Main Menu it reboots the computer. Is this because of the driver? What now?

Aside: Please confirm uninstalling and installing driver -
1. Add/Remove Program (through Control Panel) - Do I just click on Nvidia Driver? When I do this it erases ALL the Nvidia drivers (including chipset) which I reinstalled after reboot.
2. When using Disk Cleaner 3 - Do I click on "Nvidia" and click "Clean"? Is that all there is to do?
3. Install new driver.
