When RMA'ing a HD is it ok to remove all the partitions before sending it back?

My IBM drive is making funky noises/causing windows slowdowns/windows wont boot because it can't find a file --> restart and it boots fine

Allready filled out the RMA form, and am getting ready to package it up, but I was wondering if it'd be ok to remove my partition - don't like the idea of all my stuff being on the drive when I send it to them.

Thanks and LMK asap Please

Deleting the partitions won't keep people from being able to see your data. Check and see if the IBM came with a disk or has a utility on their site to completly erase it. The WD and Maxtors have a good utility.

I believe fdisk has a "write zero" feature doesn't it? Which writes 0's to the entire drive, destroying all data on it to the point that it would require going to extraordinary lengths to recover it.

This will do the job just fine. They've got a 15-day trial version there, fully functional. Wipe out all partitions on it, and then add a partition back that fills the drive, and format it. Boot to Windows, install R-Wipe&Clean, set it to the maximum wipe power setting, and have it wipe all files and free space on the drive. Hopefully the drive will survive long enough to do this.
You might want to disable System Restore on the drive first, as that'll add files to the drive when Windows boots, and I don't have any idea how much information they'd contain; probably nothing important though.
