OK i have a ThinkPad T42 and a laptop sleeve.

I am wondering is it ok to leave it in sleep mode (ie shutting laptop) or is it best to make it go into hibernation?

I leave my 42 in sleep-mode anytime I'm not actively using it and have never had a problem. I can't remember the last time I rebooted.. maybe a couple weeks ago?

I typically put mine in hibernation if I am leaving it in the case for a while. If I'm taking it a short distance, sleep mode is good. Battery is still being drained in sleep mode though, but not very much. But I have had it where I put it in on a full charge and pulled it out the next morning and it was dead.

I just map my power button to hibernate. That way, if I need to pack it up quick, I just press the power button.

Sleep keeps RAM up. That'll bleed a few watts; but that isn't enough to do any damage, barring silly situations involving perfect insulators.
