When phone rings computer freezes . . .

I am running Win2k pro SP2 and everytime my phone rings the computer freezes and I have to do a hard boot. Except, of course when I am connected to the Internet. Any ideas?

Just a guess. Do you have "wake on ring" (WOR) enabled in your BIOS? Maybe it's confusing itself.

Look into a phone line switch between your computer and your telephone. Unless you are actually dialed up and on line, you do not want to be electrically connected to your phone line. A simple disconnect box on your desk would work.

There are many reason to do this. First, if you live where I do, lightning is always a threat to phone lines, and it is not good to leave them hooked to the computer. Second, it guarantees that incoming calls will not send a voltage to your computer.

When I was on dialup, I used an automatic call director. The line plugged to it, then it connected to the phone and to the computer and an asnwering machine. No incoming calls went to the computer. They were either directed to the phone or the fax.

Not sure what you mean by "sig." If you mean the autoswitch, it was at Office Depot. WEhen I went broadband it became moot - it is all on a LAN now with iDSL and a modem/router. Dialup is only a backup.

I have always left phoneline in, never had any problems. We don't get much lightning or even rain for that matter. Thanks though, if nothing else works I might try it. Anyhow, does anybody have an idea what causes this?
