Like the bail is 250K or even $1million, why is it they have family members post bail to get them out of jail?? Whats the point?

I've often wondered this myself. I wouldn't post bail on myself for anything above $500.

If I remember right from what someone told me, depending on the offense you can either pay approx 10% of the bail and get out and not receive that money back even when you appear in court, or you can pay the full bail and get it all back when you appear in court.

Yes.

So whats the problem with posting bail? Unless you plan on fleeing the country, why not post bail? It's basically a rebate check.

a bail bondsman will typically charge 10% of your bail to get you out. pretty much say you are being held on bail for $10k. $1k to the bondsman and he'll front the other $9k to get you out. once you appear and the bail is refunded, the bondsman will typically keep that 10% you originally put down to secure a bond (or $1k in our example). Thats how he makes his money. Thats in simple terms. Ill forego the whole bondsman has a special agreement with the courts and doesnt actually write them out a $9k check to bail you out but im just trying to keep it simple.

Some people don't have that much money..that's why it's set higher for high profile crimes like murder. If you try to flee you're out of that money.

Yes.

Unless you use a Bail Bondsman, in which case you dont get back whatever percentage you put up. Usually 10-20 percent I think.

Ok so if you flee the country, but are caught by a bounty hunter, do you have to pay for the whole bail or do you still get your money back once you appear in court?

first you get an ass kickin' by the hunter, then the bondsmans going to sue you for the whole bond and then some.

The amount of the bail is enough to encourage you to show up in court. If you use a bailbondsman, they have bounty hunters to come make you show up otherwise they're out the bail money.

If it was your kid, you'd prolly try to post it.

If you own a home in the area with sufficient equity, you can put up the title.

QFT. $2500 bail means the bondsman charges you 10-20 percent of it AND you must assure the full amount. The bondsman gives the amount to the court, pockets the 10-20%, and gets the full amount from whomever took it out if the person skips to court date.

I just got an idea...

Someone wants to buy a house. They pay me say 10% of the current value of the house. I front the other 90%. We make an arrangement where you pay me back on a monthly basis (with interest of course). If you fail to pay me back, I get to keep your 10% PLUS your house.

Do you guys think it will work?

Yes, it's called "loansharking."

Unless you're a bank. Then it's called a "mortgage."

As long as you didn't make a business out of it, I don't think any law woud prevent you from doing this. If the buyer is too stupid to sell their house before it gets foreclosed on than they pay the consequences.
