When people drink out of glasses, why do they stick their pinky out?

Sitting in this coffee shop, trying to study, and I keep noticing everyone drinking their cappucinos and lattes and their pinkies are sticking straight out. Obviously, I'm getting easily distracted, but it really is fascinating.

Just saying.

I think its because they are picking the cup with with their thumbs, and then three of their fingers other than their pinky. If you do that, your pinky "automatically" sticks out.

because nobody thinks "oh damn, when I lift this cup the contraction in muscles in my thumb/3 main fingers will cause my pinky to point out. I'd better flex my pinky before I pick this up so it doesn't stick out and offend people!".

It's still damn funny...especially because I just did it without thinking about it, picking up my coffee mug *DAMN*

My count is up to something like 15 in the last 10 minutes...

It's the drink penis--that's a subconscious signal that you are enjoying your drink and your drink penis is "excited".

Take your hand, open it up flat. Touch your pointer finger to your thumb, what do your other fingers do? Now touch your middle finger to your thumb while your pointer finger is there. Observe. Now do the ring finger. Have you answered your own question? It is based on how many fingers you use to perform an action.

I do that all the time, and get just REAMED for it. I don't know why people think it's so strange. It's a little interesting, but not strange.

My mom used to fuck with me when I was younger by saying "it means your from royalty". That had me walking around in school telling people I was from a royal blood line, god dammit it's so embarrassing just thinking about it. Could you imagine my face when she laughed and said "I was just kidding" a few years later?? My name also means "king or ruler", so that only served to perpetuate it. I never got cocky or arrogant about it, I just thought it was cool while it lasted...

The important thing is if they are also eating candy bars and cookies with a knife and fork. Are they eating M&Ms in a bowl with a spoon? further investigation is necessary.

You know what else is cracking me up? Everyone and their mother are ordering *scones*. WTF? I swear they are just made of cardboard or something.

It's funny- I think people do stuff like this because they think they're "expected to" in a coffee shop- order scones. sip coffee with your pinky up..

And someone just came in, and I swear the order was something like "grande double expresso vanilla mocha latte, fair market coffee, skim milk, small sugar-free cream, lite whipped topping". I mean, when did ordering a freakin' drink become a 5 minute speech?!

its because when the pinky sticks out, the cup/can rotates away from a right angle and towards your mouth. When the pinky is wrapped around the cup/can, the container is more or less forced to be straight up.

In fact, when i set the cup/can back down, my pinky directs the container to rotate back to a vertical orientation.

I do believed a Sponge Bob Square Pants episode covered this, but the characters got it a bit wrong.

 <-- pinky

I've noticed myself doing it, and I certainly don't do it intentionally. I look down at my pinky sticking out and think "what the hell am I doing? I look like a tool." It just... sticks out.

that's because like a male penis, the human body has no real control over the pinky. It will stick out when it's pleased but only if it's pleased

*Scones taste good, especially with coffee.

*Part of the reason why coffee sounds so complicated is because the coffee shops NAME their coffees crazy things.

*Picky people order picky coffees. It's not the coffee culture that's snobbish, it's the person ordering it.
