Empty courtesy isn't a bad thing. It's the veneer that hides our inner asshole/bitch and generally makes daily life bearable.

However should you really tire of this I suggest moving to Philadelphia where they have dispensed with all forms of decency, courtesy, and politeness.

I find it really annoying when people I barely know do that in a non casual situation.

No offence but I have people that I am close to to talk about that sort of stuff with.

A lot of people don't want to chat about that stuff, and only ask how I am because it's customary. That's fine. I don't drag them into conversations about my pet rock. I just don't like someone telling me that I'm not being genuine when I ask them how they are.

Calm down, Gandhi. I'm sure you're full of shit, you just don't know it. You go to the super market and some fat lady starts loading your SACK. Do you bust a Jesus on her and start asking her how she is doing today? Do you really want to know if she is about to go home and eat 5 apple pies to ease the pain? Are you prepared to commit your time to go help that stranger? No? Didn't think so.
Love is an action. If you care about someone, that means that you are willing to offer your fucking TIME to go help them. If not, don't lie about it.

Uh, no. The lady at the supermarket is not someone I have an ongoing personal or professional relationship with. Try again.

Usually a casual question I get first thing in the morning sometimes.

It's usually just "pretty good, yourself?" on the way by with a grin or "Not sure yet, still waking up and looking for coffee"

:)

I was talking about strangers or people you barely know. So you agree with me then. I knew it.

First and foremost, anyone who says "I'm doing good!", or "I'm doing great!" need to be shot. There is only one answer for that, and it's "I'm doing well"

....shhhhh I always say I am doing good :$

The empty formalities piss me off,on the other hand people have different temperaments so what for me is a lot of hot air for others who are not so meta might be the eternal laws of the cosmos.

I've noticed the past few years that Taco Bell does this for their drive through greeting.

Speaker: "Hi, how are you today?"
Me: "Fine"
Speaker: "That's great! Order whenever you're ready.."

Just take my damn order, let's skip the small talk.

Yeah, exactly. I forgot about that shit. They do it at jack in the box as well. I drive through and they say the same thing, but they say it in a hurry. So obvious that they are being forced to say it, its almost an insult.

"Hi How are you today"
"I am hungry", or "I am tired", or "I want bacon" those three answers cover most situations.
