What is it about nuns and hammers. Quick sea story:
Pre-commisioning Unit Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) tied up to the NUSC pier in New London, CT, Sept '89, two days before commisioning. About 0230 in the morning the general alarm sounds and a security violation/repel boarders is called away. Only the duty section is onboard, strategic loadout hasn't happened yet so the only thing in the missile tubes is ballast cans. The duty section gets armed with small arms and goes topside and theres three women in the water next to the boat and 1 guy standing on the boat back by the rudder (more on him in a minute). The women, it turns out, are nuns and members of Plowshares which is some sort of anti-nuke group. Anyway they're treadng water like spastic ducks, no flotation devices and wailing away at the hull of the boat with hammers. Now remember this is a submarine and it's not made of tin. They're gonna scratch the paint and that's about it. Which we then realized, knew somebody was gonna have to paint it for commisioning, so we turned fire hoses on 'em. 125 psi fire hoses will push people under the water and hold them there. So up they came, gurgling and spitting, screaming we were gonna drown them. So having sworn to support and defend we threw them lifejackets. Which they grabbed onto and swam back to the boat and started wailing awy again. We kept them away with the fire hoses until the Coasties came to get them.
Back to the guy by the rudder. One of the two topside watches was on the on the pier when all this started and saw this guy come out of the water and start walking up the back of the boat. Well he screamed at him to stop and pointed his twelve gauge at him. The gauge was loaded but no round chambered. Well the stupid bastard stopped, stood up (still about knee deep in water) and REACHED INTO HIS POCKET! The topside watch chambered a round, drew down and was just about to send him to his maker when he saw the guy had gotten his glasses out of his pocket. He then started reading from his Bible or chanting or something. NCIS told us later that the topside watch would not have been at fault for shooting him. If we had had nukes onboard, the ROE at the time would have told the Topside Watch to shoot him as soon as he tried to come aboard the boat.
They all spent six months in federal prison.
