When mobile screen is 'dim' is backlight off or set low?

I have a iphone and after a minute of inactivity, the screen goes very dark but is still visible. I think it's called dim? Then after a few seconds in dim mode the screen will turn off completely.

In dim mode is the backlight (led light) completely off or is it just set to very low brightness?

If it was completely off you would not be able to see the screen at all.

Depends on the phone.

Some models use a reflective screen, some use transreflective. On one of them, any available outside light can pass thru easily and reflect, so the screen will be very visible.
