When might AMD cut prices on 939 cpu's ?

Looking at the published roadmaps, AMD will soon release X2 4200-4400-4600-4800+ cpu's for the new socket AM2. At that point no one in his right mind would buy the 939 parts at the same price.

So, does anyone remember the last time AMD changed sockets, and care to guess what might happen to 939 X2 prices..........and when?

All I've heard is that there will be a slight price increase to dampen demand of socket 939 parts (slight being a couple of bucks... nothing major for end users but a world of difference for OEMs with their razor-thin margins).

Furen, I've senn that on a lot of websites, but the original source is a website that, I believe, is written in French then translated. It does not make sense for AMD to raise any prices in early April when Intel is reported to have scheduled price cuts for the end of April.

I dissagree. Most people that want AMD will compare 939 to AM2 and decide which is best for them. Right now it looks like AM2 is no faster than 939, and 939 boards will prolly be cheaper than AM2, making 939 a good value.

I believe intel's 775 parts were made to be cheaper than the 939 parts when released.

AMD will likely price the 939's higher so that demand decreases and they can withdraw them. Yes initially the boards are likely to be cheaper, but with RAM usage set to increase and DDR2 being cheaper more people will begin to go for AM2, not to mention the platform will be that AMD will release future CPUs for. As demand for S939 boards decrease they'll go up in price too.

AM2 may not be faster, but will be the platform that's in the roadmaps and you'd be a fool to spend the same money (or more) on S939.

Greenman, Well, let me rephrase the point: If the cost of CPU+mobo+dram is comparable of socket AM2 v socket 939, no one in his right mind will choose the older socket. So, presumably one (or all?) of those components will come down in price. I assume it would be the CPU, since it's the most expensive part.....but I might be wrong. Again. ;-)

I'm curious what happened during the last two socket-upgrades: did AMD cut prices on the older socket CPUs, and if so when & by how much?

It would be nice to have some historical data on this subject if anyone can remember or find some source to confirm what happend when other AMD sockets were released.

plus AMD is still going to release more S939 chips as the X2 5000 and opteron 185 are coming sometime soon. AM2 seems to be hitting some snags

If its s939 X2 price cuts you are looking for, I doubt you will see anything notable any time soon as profit margins are cutting it close as it is.

hclarkjr - What? Its been said time and time again, there are no more cpus coming out for 939. the FX60 was the last one. Until I see some proof, I'm gonna believe there are no more coming out.

anyways, I wouldnt bet on price drops, no way.

Even knowing full well that AM2 was coming, I went high end s939. For the reasons that Greenman listed I might add.

Also, I knew what I wanted NOW and didn't want to wait. We all know how the waiting game goes don't we? You wait for the next best thing to come out, but just as it's about to come out you hear about the next best thing to come out and you wait again. Before you know it, you've waited forever (in the computer world) and gotten nothing to show for it. :)

No, prices are good on s939 now and they are going to be bumped up just as others have stated. If you want a particular s939 part you may as well get it now and enjoy it while you can. Just my $.02.

Link 1 never mentions 939, its coming out on 940, or a new socket.

Link 2 says that the 5000+ has never been mentioned in any roadmap (correct), and they never actually *say* that this will be available.

Having read the AMD pdf, there is mention of the 5000+, however we will wait and see. It was stated that no faster processors would be released on 939, thus opening the way for this (its not faster, just equally fast), but I personally think that this will be released on AM2, and not 939.
