When making a torrent...

I checked the file (using azureus) and it checked ok, now it says downloading. whats it downloading? the files are local on my computer

Seeding = downloading mode but you have 100% of the file.
Seeding = publishing.

A seeder is a person who has 100% of the file and is able to offer the entire thing up to clients. It takes however long it would take you to upload the file (at a bare minimum). You have to make sure to get a few more seeds out there before you can shut yours off.

so if i have it on my computer, and i seed it, then PUBLISH it on a tracker, i should be ok?
Or do I host it?

seeding = hosting. tracker only keeps track of clients and seeds. clients pass around the bits of pieces of the file they do have to each other, and eventually become seeds. if there is no seed, they can only pass around an incomplete file. u need to seed till other people become seeds atleast or it collapses. if u do leave for a while, u gotta check back and make sure theres still seeds and help out, or it'll die. what makes torrent powerful is that it doesn't place all the burden on you. instead of having 100 people killing your connection each downloading their own copy straight from u, they all share the burden of passing around the packets they have ot each other starting from the few people directly connected to you. eh.. i think thats more or less it😛

You never send the file to a tracker. The only way people can get the file is if you keep it up and seeding. Then when they are done, hopefully they will keep it up and seeding, and so on. The only thing the tracker does is store the small .torrent file that gives the info on what the file is and what parts it contains.
When you publish it, you are just creating the link to the .torrent, then people click on that link and connect to you to get the actual file.
