When looking for a good running shoe...

They are kinda flat, and I don't know if that's a good trait in a running shoe. Or if it should be more cushioned.
Any advice?

It's all about how the shoe interacts with your foot, everyones foot structure is different. You should really go to a good shoe store and have them examine your foot and explain what kind of shoe you need. If you can't/won't/don't want to do that, your best bet (IMO) would be to order these or (for a few bucks less) the 1100 which is from last season.

if it is your first time and you plan on running seriously(>40 miles/week) got to a running store, and have them watch you run and find a good show type for you.

as far as brands, i have found asics and saucony are the best for me

as advised, go to a specialty running store and have them fit you for shoes. It helps to take in old running shoes so the sales people can see whether you pronate, need more stability, etc.

and I have to agree with the other posters; Asics makes great running shoes

I would also certainly recommend going to a running store and have them fit you for a pair of shoes. The shoes there will most likely cost a bit more, but it is nice to speak with other runners that actually know what they are talking about.

I prefer Asics or New Balance (usually the NB Nimbus) in regards to running shoe brands.

I agree with what everyone except The_Dude8 said 🙂 Don't look for anything. Have a professional examine your foot and your running form and recommend shoes to you.
