I was watching PolarTec on the History Channel and they were talking about how the Coast Guard needs to cut a channel in "winter" to allow resupply of McMurdo station on Antartica. They said the icebreakers usually start about dec. 25 and finish before the end of february when the ice shelf grows too big.
Isn't that the dead of summer in the Antarctic, not winter? I thought the seasons were reversed in the southern hemisphere?
Wouldn't they need to cut the channel in the middle of "summer" about dec. 25 in Antarctica?
