Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster.

I have an obvious question. When is Vista coming out?

I've read here that it's a resources hog. My machine is a 3.6 P4 HT, 4 gig ram, and a 256 ATI vid card. I am pretty sure that it can run on my machine, but I still can't find a copy anywhere, legal or illegitimate.

Given the minimum requirements will be around a PIII 600 (if not less), your machine will do just fine.

You won't find a copy "legally" because they haven't released a CTP and/or started an external beta test with users who aren't part of large corporations.

Or you don't have an MSDN sub or didn't pay to visit the PDC.

I currently run Beta 2 via VPC and the performance is alright.

Microsoft says that it will be out before the end of next year. So expect it sometime in the December of 2006. That'll give you time to save up the 300 dollars or so to get a copy of it.

Microsoft employees often give out gratis copies. They do it for all sorts of reasons and are generally legit. I have a friend that works for MSN and he gave me a copy of XP, legit. I wouldn't assume that it's an internal stolen copy or that the employee in question is doing something illegal.

Why's that?
He had tons of legit copies he was entitled to give out.
So my "buddy" is and was in good form to give it out.
add to that the OneNote...and Office XP Pro...all legit...all fine...:)

If he isn't giving you something from the company store, the key is tied to his account.

That is, of course, quite possible. But there are also giveaways, incentives, and just outright gifts that FTEs get. It's not unusual for them to get lots of software from places other than the store and/or the online MS PID generator... legally and fairly.

rilex stfu u dont know what you are talking about

Thank you for the enlightened response, but if it is from the MS PID you're specifically told that the key is tied to your account and part of the terms is that your employment can be terminated if your key(s) is/are leaked.

You can ask any Microsoft employee. Go ahead...

PID is product ID.

That is more or less true, however, we can purchase (up to a certain limit per year) heavily discounted software from the MS store. We can then give it as gifts or sell it for what we paid for it. There are two things that are essentially instant termination. 1) Buying discounted software from the MS store and selling it for more than we paid for it and 2) selling (at purchase price) or giving away software to someone, who then turns around and sell it.

The second one is the one most of us worry about, which is why we are very selective who we give software to. The people I have bought software for are very clear that it is not to be resold and that if they do, I will eat their firstborn child (or something like that :) ).

If he was a MS employee, then the key word there is selling. I am sure they are entitled to give away those free copies, but selling them is a whole different story.

As a desperate technology lover I am badly waiting for Longhorn aka Vista. Although the name Longhorn vanishes somewhere in between but I am hopeful that on one fine day I will able to experience the crispy features of Windows Vista. I am very eager to know Windows Vista hardware specification.

Lol, exactly. People these days buy new things "just because they can". I bet if MS were to literally rerelease Windows XP with not only a different name but box as well with a different desktop color scheme, people would go nuts and go out and buy it just like this guy. and people wonder why they're broke and are in debt..
