When is "this weekend"?

I'm having a disagreement with a friend over when "this weekend" and "next weekend" is.

To me, "this weekend" means the one that is currently happening or previously happened. "next weekend" means the next one that will occur but has not yet occurred.

She said, "this weekend" is the next one to occur and "next weekend" is the one after that.

I am 99% sure I am right, but I just need a 3rd party input so we can synchronize our terms and be talking about the same thing. We had some planning problems as a result of this difference in terms.

Because of the confusion, if I ask someone early in the week, I'll say, "What are you doing this coming weekend?"

If it's Thursday or Friday, I just ask what they're doing this weekend.

If it's Monday/Tuesday and I'm asking about the previous weekend, I refer to it as last weekend.

If I say, "What did you do this weekend?" I'm obviously talking about the one that just happened. If I say, "What are you doing this weekend?" I'm obviously talking about the upcoming weekend. If I say, "What are you doing next weekend?" I'm talking about the weekend after this weekend.

I agree with you then, "What have you been up to this weekend" is something I would say and I think it implies the current weekend.

Last weekend = 27-28
This weekend = can swing either way
Next weekend = 3-4

No, you're friend is right.

"This weekend" is the weekend coming up.
"Next weekend" is the weekend after that

For instance, right now, November 3rd is this weekend, November 10th is next weekend.

Obviously if it is Saturday or Sunday, then "This Weekend" refers to the current one. This weekend ceases to refer to that as soon as Sunday is over. The weekend has past, so therefore it is now last weekend.

No, you're friend is right.

"This weekend" is the weekend coming up.
"Next weekend" is the weekend after that

For instance, right now, November 3rd is this weekend, November 10th is next weekend.

But the next weekend to occur is Nov 3-4, so shouldn't that be next weekend?

You friend is correct OP.

"Last Weekend" - The one that just passed
"This Weekend" - The one coming up, or the current weekend if it is a fri, sat, sun.
"Next Weekend" - The one next week.

"The Weekend" - Can be used for last or next depending on the sentance.

"What did you do on the weekend?"

"What are you doing on the weekend?"


Too easy people.

Substitute Friday for weekend and you will see how wrong you are.
