WHen is the next version of DirectX going to be released? And will there be a version 9.1 or higher before they release DirectX 10?

In anyone's opinion, should the next version of DirectX be compatible with just Windows 2000/XP and future Windows versions? Or should it still support junky Windows 98/ME? I am surprised that DirectX 9 still supports those piece of junk Operating Systems in Windows 98/ME. WHat do you think?

I think they should make it compatable only with the next version of windows so eveybody has to buy a new operating system as well as hardware to enjoy the new functionality:p

I would definitely NOT say that. However, I think DirectX 9 should have been comptaible with Windows 2000/XP/2003 only and ditched support for crappy Windows 98/ME!! I don't think everyone should have to buy the latest OS and hardware to use the new functionality of newer DirectX versions, I just think Windows 98/ME are such awful Operating SYstems that they have no placeon modern hardware. Windows 2000 is not as late as XP, but at least it's still a quality OS and still deserves to be supported. Why would anyone use a high end DirectX 9 video card on a high end system and decide to use a POS OS like 98/ME?

I know people that would disagree with you ;) but really, what difference does it make if an OS "you" don't happen to use is supported or not by ANY hardware or software anyway?

Seems somewhat punative if you ask me unless you're stuck writing the support itself....then at least you would be getting paid however.

The hardware is the important thing, not the API. There are no performance enhancements you can really make to an API.

So, the question yet again remains: Why would one want to use Direct3D over OpenGL? It's pure idiocy to exclude potential customers by selecting a non-portable API over a portable API when the do the exact same thing. (And OpenGL is extensible, so you hardware makers can register new features and make hardware that implements them without having to wait for the core API to catch up.) Basically, game companies are passing up money for nothing.

Flame on! :p

There maybe a update to DirectX, i don't know.

But any 'next generation' stuff is going to be integrated into Longhorn. Avalon-type stuff.

May have a version for Windows XP.

Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2003 are all out of the question. No chance that I see.

But Windows 95, definately. 'cus Win95 rox.
