http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/ebusiness/story/0,2000024981,20264619,00.htmIntel's cuts precede a major refresh to the Pentium 4 desktops. On May 6, the company will come out with a new version of the Pentium 4 as well as a new chipset for high-performance desktops. One chipset, the 850(e), will feature a 533MHz system bus--the main conduit between the processor and memory--that will deliver higher performance than the 400MHz system bus found on Pentium 4 computers today.

Why all the guesses? If a price move is going to happen in the next few weeks, you can always find the exact date from Intel itself.

Link to Intel's reseller page.

Look at the top and it says "Price move on Intel's boxed processors on May 12, 2002". There is a little lock icon next to it, so we cannot see the price drops. However with all the users at Anandtech, you would think someone should be able to pay the small reseller fee to access the link.

I have seen estimates of the price drops though and they are about 25% on the top processors.

According the Intel's pricing roadmap, the May 12th price cut will only be for Celerons. (The existing Celerons are getting a price cut in response to Intel's introduction of new Celeron chips.)

The next price cut for Pentium 4 chips is scheduled for May 26.
