When is the Mid Range nVidia 7600 due?

Looking for a new PCI Express Video Card for my rig.

Really pretty much interested only in nVidia since they have PS 3.0 right now.

I can go out and buy a 6800GT right now. Good Choice?

But maybe the next gen 7600GT may be faster and cheaper? Just don't know what to do. Buy or wait?

either in Oct or Nov. i suggest you wait and compare the performance between the GT and a 7600.

I can deal with waiting another month but two months is going to cause me pain. I live with a X300SE - take mercy on me nVidia. 😉

Thanks for your help.

But is that the release date or the date I can actually go to a computer store and order it? :-/

I thought the date was October 5, 2005. Check ATI's website's countdown. And we don't know if that is paper launch or not. Plus, if the 6800GT is the OP's budget, then the X1800 will be out of it.

There will be X1600 cards as well, also SM3. ATI has the whole spectrum covered with their new lineup, from low-end to high-end cards.

To clear all of the confusion: IIRC, the X1800XT (or PE version) would be out sometime 2-4 weeks later than the Oct 5 release. It is most likely not a paper launch. The cards rumored (85% sure) to be released on Oct. 5 are the X1800XL and the X1800LE. These info could change anytime...

Well I'm going to keep checking back on ATi's web site.

If all else fails.

X800XL or 6800GT? Which one is better value etc.

Nvidia wont do that because it overlaps into there 6800, 6800Gt and 6800Ultra sales
thats why they havent released a 7600GT yet...

I guess after 6800 stockpiles are all soled out they will start with the 7600GT or even skip 7600GT and go for 8600GT G81

That's right, Nvidia wants you to buy cards 1 or 2 (maybe 3?) generations back if you need a low or mid-priced solution.

We really do not know what is going to be released from ATI when, but at least to me, all signs point to:

X1800 line being released October 5
X1600 line being released Mid October
X1300 line being released Late October

This is all assuming, of course, that ATI is not stupid and does not do paper launches.

In response to this, Nvidia will hopefully release the 7800 standard in October, then hopefully the 7200 and 7200 lines in Late November, if things go as planned.

I gathered most of this information from www.mikeshardware.co.uk. However, all of these dates be be wishful thinking, but they will all probably be out at the latest by November (or so we hope).

Most of the information so far was gathered from:

http://www.mikeshardware.co.uk/

On the matter of 6800GT or X800XL, read this:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2299

EDIT: Just adding a little bit. Both the 6800GT and the X800XL perform very very similarly (or at least that's what I can gather), but of course the 6800GT has the better feature set, what with SM3, HDR, and better drivers (or is that my opinion? 😉), but the X800XL can sometimes be found a little cheaper, I believe.

It's all up to you in the end, though, to make the decision for the card that works best for you.

seeing as how the 7800 is a mid generation refresh of the 6800/6600 series cards, it isn't really even 1 generation back.

as for availability, it has been rumored that ATi has been stockpiling the mid and low range parts (x1600 and x1300 respectively), waiting both for the high end part (x1800) to be market-ready and for the old cards (x600, x300) to move off store shelves

Another option, if you can forego SM3.0 support, is a X800GTO/GTO2 card, which basically uses the R423/R480 chips, and can have their full 16 pipelines enabled. It's basically a "crippled" X850XT that's waiting to be uncrippled, and will probably be faster than the 6800GT in many cases.
