When is the MacBook Pro going to get a refresh?

When is the MacBook Pro going to get a refresh? I do video production and we're looking to get new MacBook Pros for travel editing. Right now I have a Quad Core Sager that absolutely smokes and it's a great laptop, but we're making the move to Final Cut Pro as soon as Apple gets their butts in gear and releases some new hardware. It's a bit sad that I've got a PC laptop with quad core since last May, yet the MacBook is still on Core 2 almost a year later. I refuse to buy old outdated hardware for the kind of money we're going to be spending (couple of laptops, desktop, possible media server and copies of Final Cut)!

Any ideas?

Before the summer. Don't worry. It's way past the time to refresh.

Some people say March.

I hope so. We have a budget this year for this and I'd like to get it done sooner than later. Just seems like Apple is behind the curve as far as technology goes in their machines.

There's a point where they are ahead in peak tech advances as far as exclusivity, but they put a lot of R&D behind their products so there will be some lag time.

I'm also waiting for the refresh since January, but no one really knows when it will come out. (also waiting for Asus UL30JT and ACER 3820T) I am still debating which of these will come out first so I can upgrade my laptop.

apparently, the mac pros are getting a refresh with 6-core intel cpus soon (9to5mac says this friday, macrumors says next tuesday). would be nice if they put out core i5/i7 in the mbps that day too.

Likely June at WWDC. They wouldn't want to dilute the launch of the iPad in March/April.

WTF?

That's a loooong interval. I'd have bought one ages ago, but the base-model MBP is poor value (you get a bigger hard drive in the plastic MacBook!) and people keep claiming there's an update right around the corner.

They keep claiming it because it's been ridiculously long since the last update, so it HAS to be coming soon. I mean common sense dictates that they'll release updates soon, right? C'mon Apple.

I'm still holding my breath for March, but we'll see...

I dont think they will come out around the same time as that iwannabeatablet. While very different it would still cannibalize the sales.

I am looking at getting a Mac of some sort. Should I wait until the new line comes out? will there be good deals on the prev models? I can get a MacBook for $799 from my local Microcenter. ($999 - $200 instant rebate). but if older Macbook pros drop around $1000 or less I might be willing to wait. I'm new to the world of Apple so just wondering how its affecting pricing in the past. Thanks.

You could always check Refurbished Macs on Apple's Online Store.

Due to the long stretch between refreshes and the relatively small price drop for outgoing models, it's much smarter to buy a model that's been recently refreshed. (This advice doesn't apply to 1.0 versions of new devices, like the iPad. You take your chances on those.)
