I want to buy some ps2's with my sony card to get in on the deal. I have a feeling that sony is going to pricedrop soon. I have until nov 31 to make my first purchase and get the $150. I'd rather wait to see ps2's for $100 than $129. What is shipping on that site for 3 systems?

The PS2 is still selling very well at $130 and there is nothing else in that price range except portables, so Sony doesn't have any reason to cut prices yet.

So...don't hold your breath. A $99 PS2 will happen someday but this holiday season is probably too soon for a general price drop. There may be Black Friday loss leaders from specific chains though, and/or bundled $5 games that you don't want :)

In June 2007, about 270,000 PS2 consoles were sold. Assuming for the sake of argument that sales would remain constant with a $30 price drop, then Sony would lose about $10 million in one month from the price drop. And need I remind you that the value of the US dollar is in the tank?

yes but every holiday season there is a drop. I believe that the GC will go to $79.99. So the PS2 has to go down seeing as the ps3 and xbox went down. Atleast something like $10-20. $119?

Plus it's getting really old but then the collection of available games is great so it balances out to justifying that it's not about the console but the ability to play all those games.

PS3 went down because it was losing badly to xbox and wii.

360 went down because it was losing badly to wii and people were scared of REDRUM.

PS2 has no competition at its price level and there isn't much reason to think that a price cut will increase sales enough to make up for the lost per-unit revenue.

270,000 x $130 = $35.1 million gross. Assume $50 profit per unit = $13.5 million net
400,000 x $100 = $40 million gross, but with only $20 profit per unit = $8 million net
But if Sony only makes $30 per unit now, profit goes from $8.1 million down to $0.

yes but every holiday season there is a drop
Xbox 360 stayed at $400 for xmas 2006. No price drop there.

Your guess may be right, we're just saying it could go either way.

what makes you think that the ps2 at this point isn't all profit for them? I doubt it costs them as you say $80. Try $30 if that. PSP had a price cut and it has no rival for the target group. DS has nothing on a psp. These things fall with time to get people motivated. I know there will be a cut, the question is how soon.

$30 to make a PS2? Uh... ok.

FWIW, there was a rumor that Sony would launch a $99 PS2 with Wii-like functionality this Christmas, but I didn't think that would happen and it seems highly unlikely at this point. (I swear I already posted that in this thread...)

I don't know why you assume the Gamecube will go down to $79. They don't drop the price every year. It's been $99 since 2003 or somewhere thereabouts.

I think the PS2 will drop to $99 this holiday season, but that's just my opinion, and I'll probably be wrong. We'll see.

YES the ps2 is so old and made in such quantites that it costs pennies on the dollar to make. After 6 years it's all profit.

I read on gamespot Nintendo wants to drop their GC to $79.99 this holiday season. Google it.

Considering they just released a new version that's 1/3 lighter than before, I wouldn't be surprised if they cut the price to $99 before the holidays. I imagine the increase in sales at that price, cheaper production cost, and money made from accessory sales would add up to be a big profit boost for Sony.
