When is the iPhone 5 coming out?

Any educated guesses? Wanna know when I should start making room for it. So sick of this iPhone 4. I want a bigger screen, but most importantly a working home button.

Havent lost my home button yet. But I am waiting for it! My ipoop loses sound inexplicably at random times. I finally got mad enough to bang it agaisnt the table, which actually made it start working again. I cant believe this crap is so beloved...

I can't believe you would rather keep bitching about it instead of just replacing it with something else.

Between having all 3 iPad's quite a few iPods and 2 iPhones have yet to have one issue.

Not a apple fan boy i try all products just stating i have yet to have a issue with any i have had.

September 12th announcement confirmed.

iPhone 5 is Coming: Apple Announces September 12 Event

It’s now official; Apple is holding an event on September 12 in San Francisco to launch the next iPhone. Select press members were sent an invitation to the Yerba Buena Center this morning with the cryptic but obvious message of “It’s almost here.”

Interestingly, that same invite graphic from Apple shows the number “12″ reflecting the number “5″, strongly suggesting that Apple will indeed reference the new device as the “iPhone 5″.

There were some suggestions the next iPhone would be called “The new iPhone” rather than “iPhone 5″, taking a cue from “The new iPad” which was so named rather than “iPad 3″. Colloquially, the devices often end up being called by a number anyway, perhaps a reason for Apple to directly indicate the number 5.

The launch date of September 12 has been expected for some time, and most indications point to a release date on September 21.

Interesting.

It would seem to me the new device would, consistent with Apple's past nomenclature, be the iPhone 6, since they have had the following names:

1) iPhone
2) iPhone 3G
3) iPhone 3Gs
4) iPhone 4
5) iPhone 4s
6) ???

In any event, while my iPhone 4 is still running fine, I will most likely upgrade, since the cost will be fairly minor after I sell my existing phone. My firm pays for my service so I'm not sure if I can easily move from AT&T to Verizon in the process, but if I can, I probably will.

I want to switch from AT&T to Verizon, but I'm not sure how that works with a pre-order. If I pre-order an iPhone 5 through Verizon, I assume that I would need to signup for service. However, isn't it at that time where I need to say that I want to keep my current phone number? Is it a problem that my current phone number won't be relinquished until I actually cancel AT&T's service?

I went to ask a guy at the Verizon store yesterday, but he had no idea.

I think it'll let you port your number during the pre-order process then you could cancel your AT&T service.

Should be iPhone 5, the 5 under the 12 in the image is a dead giveaway. 🙂

I looked at the pricing, and holy sweet baby Jesus, I am actually reconsidering switching now. The fact that I will be forced into a shared plan when I only have one device is absolutely ludicrous. I'm only paying ~$75 (after taxes and fees) a month right now for 450 minutes, 1000 texts and unlimited data with AT&T, and I would be paying $100 before taxes and fees. 😱

Yeah, I'll gain unlimited talk and texting, but I don't use it (hence why I don't have it now). Although, I don't think it's much better before the shared plans. I spoke with my brother earlier, and he's paying around $100 right now with Verizon for about the same amount of minutes, unlimited data, but I'm not sure what his text allotment is. In other words, I'm going to be spending over $300 more a year by switching.

However, during lunch, my data magically stopped working... again. I did the usual fix of turning it to airplane mode... twice, but neither time worked. I had to turn the phone off and on again to get it to work, and unfortunately, it failed again five minutes later. I got fed up with it, just said, "fuck it," and put it back in my pocket. So, do I stick with AT&T and the intermittent connectivity problems or pay ~$300 more a year to get a better connection? Although, to be honest... it's more like $20 a month since I have a discount with AT&T.

Can you afford to buy it outright? How much data are you using each month?

Yeah, I can buy the phone outright, but I'm not sure what that would do for me. The only benefit that I get there is that I can replace my 4S with a 5 on AT&T. Although, the difference between buying a phone outright and buying the phone on Verizon in addition to paying the AT&T Early Termination Fee isn't much different. Verizon with AT&T's ETF is about $100 cheaper ($400 64GB iPhone 5 + $325 - $10 * 11 months).

I think the most that I've ever used is 500MB-1GB. I'm currently at 25/31 days and I've used 472MB. My onyl worry is that this isn't as evident of what I could end up using. I would have access to LTE through Verizon and I would eventually add a tablet to it once I upgrade my iPad 2 (probably not until the next iPad). Although, it might be smarter to just go for the 1GB plan and upgrade if I need it.

I looked up my bill, and it's $82.98 without any discount. My discount is saving me $17.50, and I most likely will not be able to get a discount for Verizon. What really shocked me was that the last time I checked Verizon's pricing, they didn't have the shared plans. Verizon was still more expensive than AT&T, but it wasn't as expensive as it is now. I wasn't planning on getting a shared plan, but that's not even an option now.

EDIT:

Oh and in regard to staying with AT&T, I want to leave them because...

  • I'm tired of having to cycle my connection to fix a "dud connection." The connection is active, but it doesn't even work. This isn't a new issue, and when I asked someone at the Apple Store about it, his first question was, "are you on AT&T?" 😛
  • I don't like how they treat their customers. I haven't had any issues like people that I know (having service shut off because of AT&T's system screwing up), but I really don't like their Facetime decision. It's really underhanded to treat your users that way.
  • AT&T is taking way too long to roll out LTE access, and while their HSPA+ service is usually good, there are locations where it is just downright terrible. I'm usually stuck with 1-2 bars at work if it didn't drop to Edge (I have to usually cycle the connection to get it to switch to "4G"). Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a LTE Verizon phone, so I can't check the service capabilities at work.

I was suggesting switching to prepaid if you can afford to buy it outright.

Do you mean Pay As You Go? That seems like the only decent option as Prepaid 1GB for a Smartphone is only $10 cheaper than the Share Everything plan. That makes it more expensive as the subsidy on an iPhone is more than $240.

That would probably work given how little I use my phone as an actual phone. As I mentioned, I'm at 25/31 days and I've used 8/450 Anytime Minutes, 0/5000 Night/Weekend Minutes and 0/Unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes. 😛

Although, is there a difference between "Mobile Web" and smartphone data use? The term kind of reminds me of AT&T's $15 feature phone data option.

My friend just switched to Straight Talk (AT&T towers) and is paying $45/mo for unlimited (read: 2GB data in actual use) everything.

Right around the $50/mo mark for most of the pre-paid options. Not using Verizon or Sprint or AT&T's pre-paid, but a smaller carrier like cricket, virgin, pageplus, that sort of thing.

Don't you lose LTE with those cheaper resellers? (Not sure if that's the right term for them....) LTE is the largest positive reason why I want to switch, so not having it is rather negative. :$

You can still get LTE on TMobile pre-paid, but that doesn't mean anything wrt the iphone.
