As the title says, when are those two CPUs going to be released? i was told by someone on this board that the 990x will come out on Jan. 9th, 2011 but it's Jan. 12th and no sign of it anywhere(?).

Also, I have an i7 950 (stock not OC'd) and so would you recommend getting the 990x/995x or wait for the faster (Extreme) versions of the SandyBridge chips? The problem with that is I would have to get a new MoBo right? I have the Asus P6T7 right now and it's a great board but I'm not sure if it would work with the SandyBridge chips.

I would say stick with what you got unless you are using some pretty cpu intensive programs and you need all the cpu power you can get.

990/995 chips might not ever be released to the general public. I'm sure intel is going to wait and see how SB does before they release anything that may steal from those sales. Plus the SMALL difference in speed from the 980 to 990/995 isn't really worth holding back a purchase if you are ready to do so now and MUST have the 980x.

Are you serious? How do so many people have it already then? Are they ES chips?

I mean, I want to keep my MoBo for a while and before upgrading to the 2011 chipset, I want the best of the i7 chips.

I really hope what you say is not true! :( I want 990X/995X!!

You know i have no clue.

They should be out, but then there not shown.

I was talking with Dr. Who @ CES and he told me nothing in regards to the 995X not coming out.

All he would say is there better bin'd, but no info besides that.

But in lay terms... they are all the same stepping.
The 990X i have on eval, does clock better then the 980X.

And im willing to bet the 995x will clock slightly better then that.

But there will be no stepping changes on the gulftowns.
This is it.

Intel is ramped on 1155 / 2011, and a stepping revision on old gen cpu's will cost intel millions of dollars which i dont think they want to do it.

What's the point? It's the same as a 980x just a higher clock speed. socket 2011 will be out later this year early next year. i think you can hold out.

If I had to guess, I would assume that the chips wont be released until Bulldozer is released. If Intel believes that Bulldozer will have superior performance to the 990X then they will release it earlier to milk the higher profits. If they believe that the 990X will have superior performance to Bulldozer, then they will wait until it is released so that they can continue to milk profits from the current 980X processor.

I couldn't say it better then that.

damn... so looks like I would have to settle for the 980X? If Intel will release either the 990X or 995X, what is the approximate time frame? End of this year (2011) or earlier?

If you look at the Westmere Wikipedia page and go down to 32nm it says Q1 2011

Just get a 980x and overclock it a little? Shouldn't be hard since the chip has an unlocked multiplier. The 990x and 995x are just slightly faster clocked versions of the 980x anyway...

and rumor has it the 980x might go down to $700

lol.. I will do that if they don't release the 990x/995x. I want to get the best i7 chip for my system.

I will probably upgrade to the 2011 IvyBridge/SandyBridge system next year but I want to really get the best i7 chip.

Also, I've heard that the "Extreme" versions of the chips do NOT go down in price. I doubt the 980X will ever be $700.

A little dated BUT

When the 990X hits in the following quarter, the 970 could see a lowering of price with another six core known as the 980 launching at the ~$600 area. The 980 will have a locked multiplier, just like the 970, but it will have a clock speed of 3.33GHz.

Also what is the point of getting a 990x if there is nothing different from the 980x just a multiplier bump? (and a large price increase)

I doubt it, best case is intel is letting 980x stock dry up before they release the next. I doubt pricing will change much unless a reseller has a lot of shelf stock they would need to unload.
