The Toyota Corolla and Camry just got a major makeover, the Honda Accord will be new, what about the Civic?

I don't know for sure since I'm not a car guy, but I would imagine soon. It's had the same styling for quite a while now, hasn't it?

I believe the Civic was just redone man.....though it needs to be redone again. :p
I think the Accord gets it this next year model.

I think I prefer the previous style where it wasn't as "wedgy" (if that makes sense) circa 1996 - 1999?

Honda is a 4 year cycle, with minor tweaks from year to year usually.
Civic 96-00 was the last models, before that 91-95 had a different body style.
So techinically its not due for a overhaul until 04.

Yeah, I agree... I have a '96 Civic and I think it looks better than the newer ones.

I have 97 Ex. Personally I like the newer design better on the outside of the car. Looks more European. My cars headlights are ugly! But they neutered the suspension in the new models also.

Ick....love my 2002. It just seems less "econobox" than my friend's '98, lookswise.

But yeah it was redesigned in 2001, so technically they beat Toyota to the punch in the low-end market, and it won't be redesigned for another 3-4 years.

I've heard that there will be a major redesign in the fuel system. Supposedly, the next one will allow the engine to run on a fuel type distilled from rice. Thats just what I've heard though, so I can't be sure.

Oh I've heard about that also, they're going to increase the horsepower and lower the drag by adding some decal stickers, right?

:D

Honda is now on a 5 year cycle. The last Civic was with us for 5 years and the current Accord, out since 98 and in its 5th year, will be replaced for 2003. This means a new Civic is due in 2006.

2006?

What possible major improvements/tweaks can they make between 2003-2006?

It's always taken me awhile to warm up to new Civic designs, but I'm into the new one now. The Accord from a couple generations ago still hasn't grown on me though (the 95~99? models).

As mentioned, they neutered the suspension of the new Civic, though. To me that is inexcusable. The fun-to-drive thing is why people buy Hondas over Toyotas, you take away the handling refinement, and you just have a less comfy Toyota.

I'm into the new coupe, but the 4 door looks a bit frumpy, IMHO.

I still really like the 88-91 Civic and the 86-89 and 90-93 Accords. I had an 89 Civic LX sedan that was in great shape and I just loved it. I also had an 89 Accord LXi coupe and later, an 87 LX sedan. That 87, 3 years after I killed it, still ranks as the best deal I've ever had on a used car. 2 years and 40,000 miles in a car bought for $600 + about $300 total in repairs in all that time, not counting normal maintenance. It was in nice shape, too.

Tell us what there is to be done. It gets great gas mileage, does well in safety tests, etc. When it came out it was the top of the class and it pretty much still is. Why are you making it out to be such a piece of $hit?

Are you just saying that because you read that in a magazine somewhere, or have you actually given the new civic a good run through the turns? I don't mean to be hostile, but everyone keeps saying that since they switched from double wishbones to struts, the suspension will suck.

The new suspension works fine, the body has minimal body roll through turns, which is very good considering how tall the car is. High speed stability is very good, it goes straight and solid even above 100. IMO, the new civics still handle better than it's main competitor, the corolla.

BTW, BMWs use struts in the front also and you don't hear anyone complaining about their handling.

Where did I insinuate that the Honda Civic is a POS?

Ok you got me, I was referring to the styling which I should have made clear.

Other than my personal tastes in the styling I think it's the best car in it's class except for where performance is concerned (where the Nissan Sentra rules).

Ross - my apologies. The styling does leave a little to be desired but it grows on you - a friend owns the 4 door 01 Civic and it looks better imho than the previous 96-00 4 door Civics. (Although I still like the 96-00 2 doors better than the 01+) Regarding performance - what does the SI and the SVT Focus run compared to the Spec-V? I'm not talking about what people "claim" they run on nissanfanboyextravaganzawearetheshiznit.com - I'm talking about what magazines and publications have tested.

RagingBITCH - No apologies necessary I was a dumb ass and should have remembered what I said or at least clarified it was directed towards the styling which I'm not all that crazy about.

I don't think the Civic Si vs Sentra Spec-V pissing contest will ever stop.

RossMAN, at most they'll change the tail lights and front bumper, and maybe the front grille in '03 or '04.

And screw the Civic Si. For less than $1000 more, you can grab a base Acura RSX and be sitting pretty in what amounts to the same car/engine with more features, better styling, better EPA mileage, and slightly better weight. The Type-S isn't the only RSX worth looking at you know.
