I been thinking about getting a new labtop but I was wondering if it would be best to wait til the day after thanksgiving. Is there a difference if you buy on black friday vs a normal sale?

There are some tremendous sales on Black Friday but there never is a "best time to buy." Someone always has a sale going on somewhere.

If you can wait until Thanksgiving then do so. Also keep track of when newer hardware is coming out because often retailers will reduce the price of their present stock to move it out.

They say August/September is a great time to buy with back-to-school sales.

Plus lots of new hardware out there from manufacturers, so they're looking to sell off the slightly-older models.

Get your credit card warmed up, it's almost August!

EDIT: Actually Lifehacker is reporting that July is a great time to buy 'older' computers. So rip that card out NOW! =)

IMHO November is too late and not worth the wait. I think late september is great because the "back to school" deals are actually poor IMHO and by then students have bought their machines and the prices drop like crazy. I remember I waited during my first year of college until mid/late september (maybe early Oct) and I paid less for a much more powerful machine. Waiting until Nov IMHO doesn't really save you much. It does depend on what kind of machine you are looking for though. If you have your mind set on whatever black friday $300 laptop they advertise then wait for it, but wear protective clothing up to and including a bullet proof vest if you want to duke it out that day.
