i usually do O/C, but in this instance i am building for a HTPC box so it's not an option.

at the moment i am leaning towards a s939 3200+ as 2GHz is such a nice round figure. a 3800+ running at 2.4GHz would be even more appealing but until the 4200+ arrives it is simply to expensive.

any ideas?

There all the same silicon...
a 3200 at 2.4ghz is just as hot as a 3800

Why would you need extreme mhz for a HTPC?
With a tuner card a Athlon XP can do it easily...

but with no multiplier adjustment it means overclocking the memory and chipset, and i just want this thing to motor on quietly for years rock solid.

why a 2400MHz A64.............. because it will be my main PC until i build a dual-core DirectX10 beast next year.

not for awhile. I would just wait for the new revision of the A64s and then go ahead and buy one. Just get something like a 3500. comprimise. 2.2ghz

April, 90 nm, 2.6Ghz, should have 1 mb cache, but most likely will be 512k cache

AMD has no need whatsoever on releasing a new Athlon part. It has a comlpete performance lead over Intel (sauf one or two apps), and will probably release its 4200+ part until Intel tries doing something better than its 6xx line.

Dissapointing, yet not unexpected...
