When is lying ok?

Today was a pretty bizarre day....

So I was sitting outside on a university bench underneath some trees waiting for my next class/trying to go to sleep when this guy asked if I could watch his bike while he went inside to get a drink of water. With nothing better to do, I oblige. He comes back in a couple minutes and tells me thanks and then tells me I'm pretty. Don't know how to respond in that situation so I just say...thanks. Then he proceeds to ask me if i'm married. :Q I of course tell him no. Here's the kicker...he then asks me if i want to marry him. And he's not even joking because his face is serious. Again... :Q Nervous laughter ensues and I tell him no. He tells me I'm pretty again. He then asks me if I have a boyfriend. So I lie and tell him yeah. And then he asks if I'm pleased with my bf. I answer yeah. Then he says my boyfriend's a lucky man...and if I ever need anything, I shouldn't hesitate to ask, and then he says i'm pretty again. Then he goes back to what he was doing and I go back to looking at the clouds.

Summary:
Guy asks me to watch his bike.
Guy comes back and tells me thanks.
Guy tells me i'm pretty and asks if i'm married.
Guy asks if i want to marry him.
Guy asks if I have a boyfriend.
I lie to guy and tell him yeah.
The end.

Just felt like sharing this surreal story. So when is lying ok?

Cheers,
KiM

only time it is ok to lie is when the wife/gf ask if she looks fat in something.

You just announced to Anandtech that you're single and attractive. Good luck! :)

Yes I realize that on the surface it is semantics but when some one says "the guy was killed because of an accident its not the other persons fault" THAT is what gets on my nerves.

I'm guessing it's a cultural thing

lying is VERY bad when it leads to someone else's loss. you obviously caused that guy the greatest loss of his life! ;)

See a cool looking girl as you buzz through campus. Stop quick or nonchalant move to turn around. Nothing cool to says pops up quick, so drop your bike off with the girl, pop in the building check your breath, compose yourself and think of a witty line.

Decent move to meet a girl you dont know. Guys here could take notes.

Me and some of my friends once got another one of my friends to go around proposing to people. He had made a comment about how he could get at least one of the girls in the room at the time to marry him. We took him up on it.

Unless you saw a group of guys in the not-so-far distance giggling like catholic schoolgirls, well, I don't think that's your situation here.

Edit: Lying is the easy part. Little white lies like this to people you will probably never see again are okay. The problem comes with your conscience.
