When is Intel changing their chipsets?

I am building a new machine soon and want to check to see if I should bother getting a motherboard that supports a quad core chip. I'll be going Core 2 Duo on this machine, if Intel is going to keep their current chipset design for a while I'll get a board that can run the quad core chips so I can upgrade to one of them in a few years when they come down in price, but if they have a new chipset coming out soon then I wont bother and just get a new motherboard when the time comes to upgrade again.

Anyone know anything?

Intel has boards that support Quad Core (like mine) and even future Intel chips possibly(penryn), don't you know? There is no need for new chipset, 975X is still OK .

Yeah, that's all well and nice, but when will they release something new that needs something beyond the 975? The first response said possible for future intel chip support but is that confirmed?

it's not confirmed,I've only read it somewhere on the net. The future penryn processors will require different voltage settings so it might be compatible with the existing 975XBX2 boards with a bios update.

I'm in the same boat (about to build a new PC) and it appears the next generation chipsets (Bearlake etc) are likely not coming until Q3-07? I mean retail availability. Anyone have further info on this? They are definitely not imminent.
