When is DVI going to die out?

Earlier today, I moved my 2408WFP over to a secondary computer (SFF in sig) and realized I could ditch the DVI cable for HDMI or Display Port, since the monitor and the HD 5770 each have both. Looking back at my main computer, the GTX 285's port configuration seems archaic in comparison. Even though my EA231WMi has a DP connection, I can't use it without buying an adapter.

That got me thinking: why do graphics cards - even ATi's top-of-the-line 5000 series - still ship with two DVI ports? DVI connectors seem unnecessarily bulky compared to the alternatives, and (correct me if I'm wrong) offer no advantage over the other digital connections. Not to mention the slight chance of bending a pin and the annoying thumb screws. I'm glad to see Nvidia's 400 series come with HDMI now, but still, why the two DVI?

Serial and parallel ports are virtually extinct. Most graphics cards no longer ship with S-Video or VGA connectors. Even Firewire and PS/2 ports are slowly fading out of existence. Can we PLEASE do away with DVI?

Gonna be a lonnnggg time... and VGA is still used in what, 100% of businesses?

I suppose it could be ditched on higher end graphics cards, but VGA and DVI still have their place.

I purchased the Alienware 120hz 23.6" monitor yesterday and I've been told it only supports 120hz+1920x1080 with Dual link DVI as HDMI does not have enough bandwidth (I assume this is HDMI1.3 and 1.4 may have enough but needs to be physically supported?). I think it is the same thing with Displayport. I'd love to do away with bulky DVI but it looks like it's staying around for a while longer.

of all the monitors for sale right now, and all the monitors currently at people's home or in businesses, how many have DP connectors?

think about that

DVI will be around for a while if you ask me. I bought two 22" LCD monitors which is the same model of course. The monitors have vga, dvi, hmdi which is kinda nice in a small way.

I can have my main PC setup for duel monitor. Plus have my console hooked up to the hdmi port. Pressing one button on the monitor I can change which one I view.

Most people still have DVI ports on their monitor. I'm a fairly frequent up grader in general, and even I tend to keep LCDs for 3-4years. Most people keep monitors for longer than that. Some people on AT video are still using CRTs...

Funny that you should mention PS/2 ports... Think of how long PS/2 has literally been obsolete (longer than any of us have even known HDMI existed), and yet motherboard manufacturers still include them on motherboards. If this is any indication, DVI will be around for a while.

HDMI is pin compatible with single link DVI. Most DVI ports on a video card are dual link, meaning HDMI is limited to 1080p... at least, it was... starting with spec v1.3 it can do 2560x1600 resolution (like DVI).

that being said, there is no reason to use it over display port, display port is not only superior, it is also free of royalty charges... so companies all have an interest in seeing it succeed.

As far as VGA still having a place... its place is in the trash bin. It is ancient obsolete tech and it shouldn't be used anymore. Heck, its actually more expensive to implement than DVI (because you need to add a digital to analog converter on each device)... Only reason it is still around is momentum... and I disagree that 100% of businesses use it; plenty do not.

Not going to happen.

Look at composite video: non-HD, shitty image quality yet every TV, DVD player, console and cable STBs still has them and since like forever.

Most of the machines at work still have VGA, and use them. My work laptop docking station has one VGA and one DVI connector--to use two monitors, I have to use the VGA connector.

My fairly new Dell laptop has only a VGA connector (about a year old)--and I disappoint myself for buying cheap junk.

not gonna happen because hdmi offers no advantage over dvi on the computer platform.

yes, I do know sound outputs from hdmi, but on a computer that's an invalid point.

I would guess that in the next 5 years you'll really see DP take over. Almost all high end video cards have the connector - a lot of monitors are starting to have it as well.

VGA was on video cards for quite a long time before it finally died out.

I have two 5 year old VGA LCDs which I still use (along with a 24" DVI/VGA LCD).
I'm also using a ~10 year old PS/2 keyboard.
Some things just don't really need upgrading.

seeing that my 3007wfp only has a dvi port on it and pretty much requires a highend card to drive it the way i want to, i think this answers your questions
