I've found that with most games, at 1024x768 they work pretty well if they don't support 1280x1024.

I've run CS at 1280 x 1024 on my CRT before. What OS are you running?

No he doesn't, he wants his proper resolution, but some games don't support it.

I'm just saying that in that case, 1024x768 has worked just fine for me and my LCD.

How do you know he hasn't got a 5:4 LCD screen? there are a lot of 17" with 5:4 aspect ratio.

I am running windows xp home with a 17" LCD whose native resolution is 1280x1024 <-- i couldn't find that option in counterstrike.
i just don't want that nasty interpolation at non-native resolutions.
i don't mind the black bars running across the screen... so how do i do it?? :D

Get the 1.6 beta. There's tons of servers, shields, 2 new guns, and 1280x1024. It's sweet.

If I installed 1.6b will I still be able to use 1.5? Or would I need to reinstall it again?

Don't lie.

You can still use 1.5. It's a completely separate thing.

You download and install Steam. Then you set it to download CS. Steam downloads a file into ..\Steam\SteamCache\counterstrike that contains the 1.6b. Your original 1.5 is still in ..\Halflife\cstrike or wherever. Trust me, I've got 1.6b installed and I still play 1.5 occasionally as well. 1.6b is launched from within steam, 1.5 is launched from within HL.

beta 1.6 has been out for a few months now. it should be released before half-life 2, probably will come out shortly after the CPL. yes you can have both 1.5 and 1.6 installed at once. it goes to a completely different folder. as far as the res question, IMO getting true 100 fps (with refresh rate over 100Hz) is more important than a huge res with lower fps and a worse refresh rate (also no vsync). 1.6 *should* support 1280x960 when it comes out, but i don't know if they will do the other res. and i don't play on an lcd (except when i use my laptop).
