First, I'll put my flame suit on for the declawing...

Anyways, Smokey is going to be 3 months old at the end of the month... I am guessing its still early for those operations but I figured I would ask anyways. I've heard people getting their cats spayed/neutered/declawed around 6 months old to 12 months... when is a good age in your opinion?

Thanks.

Before they start spraying. Once they do, it's a habit for them. So sometime between the 6-8months.

Personally I see nothing wrong with declawing but consider it a last option, after all the toys and stuff failed. If my cat scratched all over I would have had her declawed but since she only sctaches my bed frame I decided that it was something I can live with.

Oh yeah, don't mention declawing on the forums. It gets as bad as any ricer or P&N thread, too many people talking without fully understanding the issue.

You can spay/neuter the cat at about 6 months, and for the luvagod, don't declaw the fscking cat.

DO NOT neuter your cat too early. They neutered my Zero when he was too young, and now because of that his belly hangs down really low. It's not anything that hurts him I suppose, but it is caused from being neutered too early. You would think the SPCA would know this... idiots.

Vets have always told us after 6 months.
So in response, after 6 months/after 6 months/never.

mandatory response: "Declaw your cat?!?!? YOU ARE THE DEVIL HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!"

personally i don't care what you do with your cat, declaw it, I would. I think you can get it neutered/spayed anytime. Not sure about declaw. I bet your vet would know though.

Declawing, I've found, is total BS. Trimming a cat's claws only takes 1-2 minutes every few weeks. Give them a good, tall scatching post to climb around on (clawed cats actually prefer climbing to jumping), teach them to use it (just put the kitten on the vertical post--he/she will grip on and climb to the top) and they'll forget about the furniture. The low pile carpet on a good scratching post provides an ideal clawing surface, unlike most furniture, so they will easily prefer climbing and scratching on their artificial "tree".

Neuter or spay after 6 or more months.

6 months for spaying and/or neutering.

Declawing is inhumane, but besides that really not worth the money. Unless you have a cat who's particularly impossible to deal with you can usually clip or dull the ends of their claws every few weeks without much trouble.

My cat was under 6 months when we got him fixed. He still sprays all over the freaking place (but sprays outdoors only, not indoors. He's an indoor/outdoor cat in the country.)

Female cats can spray too. Pretty rare though, usually in response to something stressful (moving, new cat, etc)

Mine pissed all over my car's backseat when I was at my gf's house (she has 4 cats) and she was too scared to use the litter box I brought since she was hiding in the closests. I get ready to go home, put her in my car and what do you know, I have cat urine on my backseat. It wasn't spraying though.

both of my cats are declawed, and there is not a problem with it. atleast the furniture my mom didnt wanna get ripped to pieces is still intact. The cats acted just tired and wierd for like 2 days, then after that they were fine. they are mainly indoor cats so its not like they NEED it to survive. also, we have a little maltese and the cats sometimes smack the hell out of the dog when they play around. if the claws were extracted when the cats smacked the dog, the white maltese would be red by now full of blood from cuts.

Oh, that was mostly just in response to Kami. Most people seem to think that altered males don't spray, or only spray if they started before they got fixed. It's not always true.

I know that. Females can spray too, and fixed males. But if you get him fixed later you have a higher chance of him being a sprayer.

btw, it's kind of interesting how he only sprays outside. Do your neighbors have cats too?

For all that probably hate me for getting my cat declawed: she'll be an indoor cat.

Yes. I started trimming early with both of my cats, and while they don't enjoy the process, they basically trust me, and know I'm not trying to hurt them. I just hold them and talk gently to them while I do it, and they barely even squirm, even the moody, sometimes ornery one.

We're out in the country, with coyotes and bears and bobcats and foxes and skunks, and whatever. We have a dog and another cat (outdoors only.) He has only sprayed twice indoors in the last 9 years. Once, he sprayed our brewing bucket when we were making beer (something about the smell of it set him off) and once earlier this year, he sprayed the tub we keep our firewood in (next to wood stove) when we had some company over (smelled thier cat on them or something?) He got his ass thrown outside with a good screaming at as he sailed into the yard.
