When installing a DSL modem & router, do you have to uninstall then reinstall PPOE?

The message title is kind of confusing. Let me explain. I was surfing the forums over at DSLREPORTS.com, specifically the Southwestern Bell (SWB) section. Lots of horror stories....I hope I have a relatively trouble-free experience with them. Anyway, I read on post where this guy installed a router & his modem, and was having a lot of problems with connectivity and windoze errors.

Turns out he had two different versions of PPOE (I know it's a specific type of network protocol...I'm not a networking guru, as you can tell 😱 ) loaded on his system. One from the modem CDR the other from the router CDR.

Someone posted the fix. He said "you need PPOE installed in order to initially get your username/password from the ISP. After that, uninstall PPOE, then install the software for your router which will include PPOE."

Please help me out with this. I'm using (will be using, if SWB gets off their collective *ss and activates DSL on my line :| ) the modem and a router. Modem for obvious reasons, router for a firewall and to run a line to my other computer in the living room.

I know very little about networking protocols, so please use "Networking Language for Idiots" when responding. Thanks and have a super pleasant day.

Well, I have Sprint DSL (earthlink), and it uses PPPoE. I have never installed the winpoet software they included. I was able to get my initial username and password from them before hand, then punch it in the router, connect to their web site and change my password, then change it in the router. I'm not familiar with SWB's setup, but you should be able to get your user name and password before installing anything.

You will need a router that supports PPPoE. I have the Linksys, and I know that netgear also supports it.

I'll be using a Netgear router, I know it does support PPOE (or is it pppoppe? or whatever...). Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna call SWB right now and see if I can get hooked up with a username and password.

With the router you actually shouldn't even need the software that came with the DSL. Just make sure your router is PPPoE compliant and read the setup instructions for it.

Hey Michael, how are you so polite when you've got a black eye and you're bleeding! Hehe talk about mental warfare.. 🙂

BTW, It's just PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet)

Ah, I picked that icon because I didn't care much for any of the ones that are available. Besides, with my schedule, that's usually what I look like anyway...minus the blood of course. 🙂

I cannot verify other configurations, but my router would NOT work with PPPoE software installed.

Dslreports discussions were correct. Get your username and password and then uninstall the software. Do not reinstall.

you're NOT supposed to have the PPPoE software if you use a router that supports PPPoE.

it makes no sense... it's like having DSL or cable, and then using your dial up modem to dial out for internet access...
