when I push the clutch in in pludges forward

I have a 2000 ford escort 5 speed and when I pushed in the clutch and tried to start it.. it plundges forward.. help 😕
 
My memory tells me that a 2000 Ford Escort has a Clutch Master and Slave cylinder. Should either of these be bad, when you push in the clutch pedal, the clutch will still be engaged. Check your owner’s manual for exact location of these parts, but often the Clutch Master Cylinder is next to the Brake Master Cylinder mounted on the firewall, and Slave cylinder is mounted under the car. See if there is fluid in the reservoir. If not, you can try and add some brake fluid and see if your pedal starts working, but highly unlikely. Normally the Clutch Master and Slave cylinders are replaced together, as if one is bad, likely the other is too, or near time to replace. Last time I did one of these, the Slave was about $110 and the Master was about $110. Figure about 2 hours labor. If you take it to a shop figure about $600 or more.

Uhhh, no. Obviously the disc and pressure plate are ok, or they wouldn't be grabbing. There is no reason to even think about opening it up.

OP: You have a hydraulically actuated clutch, and more than likely you have a leak in the hydraulic circuit. Check the reservoir as mentioned above, and look for any obvious leaks. If you have the skill, you can replace both the master and slave cylinders for ~$50. It is best to try and diagnose before fixing, unless you like fixing things that aren't broke.
 
You're trying to start the car in gear?

It sounds like what some guys already said, your clutch isn't disengaging completely.

Could be air in the system somewhere.
 
My 91 escort did this I replaced the master and slave for 40 and all was well. If theres a leak its the slave no leak probably the master but you might as well replace both at the same time.

True, but if there was that much damage to the belleville spring/TB that it could no longer catch the throwout bearing, it would have been noisy either during the failure or afterwards. Also it is much much less likely than a hydraulic leak.

Definitely less likely but still possible. And yes, I've seen it happen on several occasion with different types of cars over the years and w/o noises. Worn or broken pressure plate "fingers".
 
Happened to me, the clutch fluid had leaked out and slave master cylinder was the culprit. I replaced it, filled the fluid back up bled the system, fixed it. Course in actual fact it took a few hours, but probably fluid.
 
I replaced master and slave in my escort,bled the lines and all. Now when i have the pedal completely depressed, and held, the "rod" on the slave (that pushes againt the lever on transmission) slowly releases itself, thus causing it to stick in gear. Any idea??

Something's leaking or there's air in the system somewhere. If you pump the clutch pedal several times, does it work again (until it slowly releases)?
