I experienced the same problem. In my case i installed the latest SBlive Drivers and every action after starting would result in freeze. Even when browsing net and scrolling pages would freeze it.
The solution was when downloaded a patch for SBlive and AC97 from "Windows Update Site"evrything has came to normal.
If you want to debug try removing the sblive card and start ur comp. IF the problem dissappears u know what to do next. 🙂
It could also be just the computer waiting to display until all the drives have regestered a respnse to its query. Put a (some) Cd(s) in the drive(s) and listen to see if it (they) are spinning up while your folder "hangs". I seem to rember reading a tweak to fix this, try searching for it on google. Good luck.
I had a similar problem. when I opened windows explorer then click on my computer it would take sometimes like 5 seconds for my hard drive and cd drives to show up. When I uninstalled msn messenger this went away completely.
If you want to know how to uninstall messenger go here and search for messenger
