Hi ,

I run SuSE 9.1 pro and i just setup a new system :

P4 2.8c 800FSB HT
ABIT IC7
2 x 256mb Geil PC-3200

anyway when i click on an icon or the processor load goes up " I.E mouse scrolling " i can hear my CPU fans RPM's going up and down in quite a dramatic way .

They shoot up from about 3500 rpm to about 4200 RPM's , can anyone explain why this is , and if it can be fixed , because my system's overclocked and the last thing i want is a CPU fan problem .

I didnt know where exactly to post this query if it was the OS , CPU , Motherboard , or the FAN that was causing this .

My guess: not enough power coming from the power supply. Could be that the action of using the mouse is for some reason causing SUSE to use a lot of CPU time and maybe increasing the amount of power it uses, since it's at load. That little boost up could be too much for what your power supply puts out, and then you fans get less juice. I had a psu blow once and the mobo stopped giving my ram enough power... you can imagine my concern when my $250 worth of ram started giving memtest errors... A new power 450W power supply fixed my problems.

If you can borrow a 400W or better one from someone local, I suggest giving it a try.

EDIT: It's not necessarily the amount of watts your psu puts out, but also how many amps for the 12v rail, and others. Some 350W power supplies put out better quality and more amps than the cheap 450W power supplies.

I have a 450watt enermax PSU so my PSU is more than capable .

And it also does it in Windows XP .

It's a really annoying droning sound up !down ! up! down !

hhmmmmmmhuummmmmmhuummmmmmhuuummmmmmm

System specs are :-

Intel P4 2.8 GHz @ 3.7 GHz [ 14 x 264 @ 3696 MHz]
Abit IC7 - motherboard rev 1.1
2 x 256mb Geil PC-3200 [ Dual Channel ]

I was just wanting to try and get some sort of fix for it ?

I tried plugging my CPU fan into the PSU plug instead of the motherboard but that didnt help . :(
