usually this happens when it's cold out before the car is warmed up, mostly in first gear.
while slightly rolling (1-5mph), i try to put it in gear and it just feels like it's resisting more than usual. sometimes i'll even get a crunch.
is that grinding a gear? bad synchros?

04 accord 5 speed, normally buttery smooth.
a double clutch maybe helps slightly.

Somewhat normal with cold fluid. Try to avoid doing it or it'll get worse.

I recommend changing the tranny fluid for some good quality mobil1 or redline/royal purple. I've found it helps a lot with trans that are starting to grind every now and then

If I am rolling at all in 1st gear the synchro in my car tries to fight back with minimal to large force, depending on how fast I am going. I can usually push through if necessary, but most of the time I don't need to.

My trans fights like crazy when it's cold. First is a bitch to get into, and second feels like hell

By cold, I mean cold weather. Waiting for the engine to hit operating temps doesn't help.

I'll wait for it to warm up, and if the issues don't go away, then I'm just going to put a new trans in.

not in a torqueless car where it will lug in 2nd gear.

but how did you start moving in the first place?

instead of letting off the brakes in neutral and rolling to start, shift into first and then let off the brakes....

because engine temp doesn't matter...its the same way in my civic, but after 20 mins of driving on the highway, my tranny is warmed up as well, and then its as smooth as butter.

???
do you drive stick?

Either come to a complete stop or put the car in second gear?

Surely you can at least take off in second gear, so you should be able to go into second from a slow roll. :p Just use more gas and more slippage.

I mean, I drive a car with like 110wtq....and I can go into second from a slight roll,ha ha.

i do indeed.

you said "not in a torqueless car where it will lug in 2nd gear"
in response to "You should be in first gear before you are moving."

i took this to mean that, if you are moving, but moving too slowly for 2nd gear (i.e. 2nd gear would lug), you should shift into first so that the engine won't lug.

my point was that you should always have the gear lever in first before the car starts moving/rolling/you take your foot off the brake.

or, were you referring to a situation where you are already in motion, but find yourself at a speed too slow for 2nd gear, and therefore have to shift down to first? i drive a torqueless wonder of a car and i have never, ever come across such a situation. i suppose it is possible on a very steep hill at a very low speed.

This is my one major mechanical complaint about my truck. The first gear is incredibly low and the difference between 1st and 2nd is HUGE. So there are a lot of scenarios where you're going too slow for second...but shifting down into 1st is not really a good option because I don't believe it has a synchro (do any cars?).

Basically I have to come to a complete stop to get it into 1st and then I crall from there...just makes things very clumsy when driving around town and the shifts from 1st to 2nd are not as smooth because of the huge gap.

The really low 1st is a godsend in stop and go traffic and offroading though.

Per Mazda:

1st, 2nd, 3rd triple syncroed
4th is double
5th and 6th is single.

So yes my first gear has syncros.

Generally I find I need to goose the throttle to make a smoother 2nd > first shift to speed up the input shaft a bit.
