when I enable HD DMA Win98SE won't shut down

I have a WD 7200 ATA 66 20 gig HD, shown as generic on device manager. It works OK but someone said it would work faster if i enable DMA. So I checked the DMA box but system won't shutdown when I have done that.
What do I need to do please?
I am no expert on HDs
