is it alright for it to be upside down?

I have it turned off and when i put it in my backpack... i put it in sideways but sometimes when i lay the backpack down or whatever.. it gets upside down.

Is this harmful for a laptop?

well, if you dont have your harddrive filled, the data might spill onto the top portion of the drive

Dude.. in like half the laptops, the hard drive is mounted upside-down anyway. So, if the hard drive can run upside-down, it's only the CDrom that potentially can't (since everything else is 0 moving parts). Now, the CDRom clicks into place on the CDRom drive.. so the CD isn't going anywhere when you turn the laptop.

Using the laptop upside down will not harm it.. Spinning it around violently while you're using it could harm the hard drive or CDrom. However, if the laptop is off, the hard drive is parked and so is the CDRom drive... so, you can even spin your laptop around violently until your heart's content as long as the laptop is off.

Most good laptops will even survive a fall off a table.

You are finding out that you shouldn't have posted this question in the OT forum because you will get alot of babble and no real answers. The problem I see in carrying the laptop "upside down" is that if there are alot of books in your bookbag the weight of those books may damage the screen casing and/or the screen. Make sure when you set the backpack down it is always upright so the weight of those books doesn't rest on the top of the laptop.
