I heard like ME has some problems with some hardware and some programs like Photoshop and stuff that make you update?? Or should I just stick with 98 Plus

If your Win98 is working great(like mine is)then stick with that,WinME is more ram hungry & there are a few problems,I hope Microsoft bring out a WinME SE with all the problems fix.

I just upgraded two servers with ME from SE. Both on LAN, both with DSK access as well as modem, both with SCSI . . . scanners, external drives, LS-120, USB, firewire, etc. And I do extensive digital imagery processing with Photoshop LE and other ware.

Both upgrades took 30 minutes each, and were flawless. Everything works as advertised. No tweaking needed except to delete all the gratuitous M$ junk like Online Services, MSN, etc.

We are two days into use, and have yet to see a hiccup. What makes ME really worthwhile is a faster TCP/IP stack, and the use of Fusion 1.0 to eliminate the threat of system files being replaced or overwritten by overzealous programs.

RAM hunger is not a problem . . . nor are resources. With 384 megs it is a non-issue. :)

This same thread is being so overdone.

Okay, Heres the inside scoop from someone "in-the-know" at MS.

Windows ME is an absolute farce. If you think that win98 SE is not stable enough for you then you should be using Windows2000. The major upgrades from 98se to ME are so pitifully small that its sad. Media player is an absolute peice of crap. System restore has its moments, but dont expect miracles.

98SE is faster, drivers are more stable and if you are smart enough to put it on its own partition, defrag periodically, own a virus-checking software program, make YOUR OWN back up of your registery (whew) and with all of that simply be careful of uninstalling and installing a bunch of crap all over the place...you should be satisfied with the performance.

Also, If you put a machine with 98SE and ME up against each other and instead of spending the money on ME, put more memory in the system, you should see a major performace increase.

Simply put, more memory = faster performance.

I would seriously doubt that anyone has much better performance under any circumstance with ME over 98SE

ESPECIALLY in the TCP/IP stack. Because they are virtually identical in every aspect.

IMO Whistler is going to make this entire argument obsolete.

So, the moral to this story is:

Put more memory in your system, Wait until Whistler comes out, Run 98SE (better yet Dual boot 98SE/Win2k, play games and what not.

Good luck

Grass: Make sure you have the latest patch to ECDC 4.02 . . . makes it 4.02d.

I just finished burning two CDRs at 8X with ME. Not a problem at all.

As far as the TCP/IP stack goes, the one in ME is the same as that in Win 2000. It was causing some problems with broadband users in one of the final betas. The trick is to have everything turned on . . . up and running when doing setup.

As far as stability goes . . . what is more stable than stable? My 98SE was rock solid . . . and now ME follows in the same path. What makes stability is to reject TSRs and automation. That has been the case since Win95.

Win 2000 is a good program in the NT vein . . . but it is a double-dyed bitch to set up. It does not like USB devices, hubs and other things. If you are peripherally minimal, it is a good product. Otherwise, you can end up like a couple of clients . . . three weeks later and still everything does not run . . . yet!

And, there's no doubt that Whistler will be much better. In the meantime we go with what is at a reasonable price. ($49.90 including tax and shipping.)

BTW . . . it really does boot faster with lots of peripherals, LAN, SCSI, USB, etc. :)
