I've been having a great deal of trouble with my PC lately. I think this is due to one of the problems I had before with a bad stick of memory.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1294570

There are some video files that I can open from my hard drive, but when I copy them to DVD only half of them open from the DVD and I get a cyclic redundancy error when I try to copy them off the DVD. When I open them from my hard drive I have no problems. Are these files corrupt? If they are how can I fix this?

Some system info:
DVD media: Arita (the media with the pink labels, I was told these are manufactured by ritek, but I'm not sure)
OS: Windows 2000 SP3
Software: Ahead Nero 5.5 (upgraded to last version they released)
DVD burner - NEC ND-1000a (Verbatim Burner)

Thanks in advance,
Psyber

That's what I thought was the problem before. I tried turning off all the processes and stepped away from my computer and files were still coming out corrupt. I have tried other things so far and have had some success reducing some of the problems, but still would like to get it to work completely.

-turned off and disabled all unnecessary processes
-got Nero clean to disable all the drivers that may conflict with the Nero software
-rebooted
-got another hard drive, formatted it, and copied the files to the new hard drive before burning to DVD
-burned DVD without using it.

When I did this, the burn verification tells me that half the files match exactly, 4 don't match, and 2 are unreadable. It is typically the last 2 files that are the unreadable ones. When I try to play the avi files, all but the last 2 are able to play. The last one doesn't play at all and the second to last, plays midway and stops. I've provided more info about the system and software above.

Try a new firmware on the burner. I couldn't burn ritek discs at all with my lite-on until I updated the firmware.

Check the memory on your computer with a program like WMD (you'll need to install it onto either a floppy disc or a CD - DVDs don't work).

You should update your windows installation too - you are missing out on a lot of stabitiy and security patches by running SP3.

I'll try the firmware and the memory check tonight. I'm going to hold off on the windows update because I plan on rebuilding my system after I get everything backed up. Anything else I should try?

Well, I had the newest firmware and my memory check went OK. I flashed my NEC ND-1000a to an NEC ND-1100a, and it ended up making it worse, only 2 of 20 files came out. I think I may just flash it back to the original firmware. I'm starting to think it's the DVD media.
