When/how was your innocent view of the world destroyed?

You know how when you're a kid and the world seems magical and innocent. When was that destroyed for you?

When I was 6, our garage got broken into and a bunch of stuff got stolen. One of the things stolen was an RC car I had just bought for $80, which took me forever to save up for. My parents felt bad for me and bought me another one. But that was when I first felt the "reality" of the world.

Can't ever remember such a defining moment to tell you the truth. Though spoiled as a kid, single child, I was never raised with that magical bubble feeling that some kids have and that bursts one day. I was raised an atheist, never really believed in magic, mysticism and the like. It's not like my parents raised me with a bleak world-view or anything they simply never went out of their way to put the blinders on. I can remember one day as a young kid near Christmas coming into my parents bedroom and asking "Santa Clause doesn't exist does he"? To which he answered no. I always knew somehow.

I was never raised to be anything. I figured Santa Claus by the time I was three and religion never made sense to me.

But the government seemed like this magical thing that just worked. The world just somehow ran itself. Things were good.

We were poor growing up and had to play with sticks and rocks while the "rich" kids got the nice new cool toys.

I grew up with fancy toys, but the best times I had were playing with sticks and rocks.

When I was 5 or 6 and I started thinking about all the poverty, hunger, murders and stuff like that in the world, and how the majority of humanity doesn't give a damn as long as it doesn't happen to them.

when I was told that santa claus wasn't real.

I was angry with my parents for lying to me and I've been paranoid and inherently distrustful of anything I'm told ever since.

When I was growing up, we didn't have any money for toys, so I stole them all. Magical and innocent, yeah... right.

Please tell me you are joking. You hear about it happening to kids but still....

Not that it should scar you or anything just that's not a memory I would want!..

I grew up poor--holes in the roof, no hot water, family living on welfare eating egg rolls for months on end, etc. My most sobering moment was at some point with my wife--she made me realize that life doesn't suck, and things can be good. She is optimistic to the point of naive, so we even each other out very well. That said, my family is better than most, and I wouldn't have changed a damn thing about how I grew up.

I can't say it was destroyed, I just outgrew the innocence. I do, however, remember seeing a guy die on the news (he fall out of window during a hostage situation). That was a bit shocking because I was old enough to understand what death was.

Grandparents dying to a drunk driver 2 days before my 10th birthday. That birthday was attending a funeral service.

It happened earlier this evening, when my 3G iPhone locked up for the last time. I threw it against the wall, where it not only left a nice dent, but the screen went completely white.

I will be replacing it, but not with an iPhone. What a useless piece of junk that thing was.

When I found out that long-haired guy outside my 1st grade class didnt really lose his puppy, and there was certainly no candy.

The last time it happened, I quickly realized that my parents didnt really tell him to pick me up from school :(

Like many who grew up in the 50's and 60's, mine was when Kennedy was shot. 13 years old and I questioned everything that was told or sold to me as gospel from then on.

i was 10 when 9/11 happened. people jumping from the towers at 100 stories up :Q
i was actually ok w/that. seen buildings collapse many times in the movies.

but innocence was lost when i saw the aftermath pics of their bodies. or rather their body parts. (think throwing tomato against the wall.) gives another meaning to terminal velocity :(

Grade six I found a book at school that discussed how babies are made. Yes, grade six. And it shattered my world.

You are old! But I agree with him there is something strange about seeing bodies after events caused by other people. Accidents are bad but post-war bodies and what not is disturbing.

When I was 5 I had to flee my home because Serbs were coming to kill us. Became a refugee on my 5th birthday.

EDIT: Now that I think about it more, probably a few days before that when I saw a tank roll into my village. It's hard to explain but I felt as if I grew up rapidly that day.
