When faster Internet isn't really any faster at all??

For the past few years I've used Time Warner cable Internet. The price was about $20 a month originally, then $25, for 1 megabit per second speeds. That was fine for 99% of my use, but occasionally (around once a month) I have to work with high resolution graphics images (downloading, & uploading to send to my editor) When I'm doing that, it can get quite annoying.

I was shopping around last month, thinking about switching to Frontier Internet - 3 mbps for $30 a month, when I came across an article saying Time Warner was increasing their Internet Lite to 2 Megabits per second nationwide, and dropping the price to $15 a month as of early November. I figured what the heck, I'll be very happy with twice the current speed, especially considering they are dropping the price! Evidently they were feeling competition from DSL & other internet providers, who were starting to offer faster speeds for lower prices in many areas.

I waited a month, then did internet speed tests. It doesn't matter whether I am hooked up wirelessly or with Cat5, I get the same exact speeds at various times of the day - 1 megabit upload speeds, and 1 megabit download speeds. I have not seen it vary more than 5%, ever. My cable modem can handle 50x this speed, and the simultaneous dual band router can definitely handle many, many times this speed. I am getting exactly the "up to 1 megabit" speed that I was getting under the old "Internet Lite" tier.

I finally called Time Warner today and asked when I would see the increased speed. I thought that maybe for some reason I was still set up under the old settings that had my speed maxed at the 1 mbps. She said that as long as I am getting 1 megabit per second, I am right where I should be. The lady told me that despite the "up to 2 megabits per second" rating, most customers nationwide are reporting download speeds from 760k to 1 megabit per second. I told her that the website says "up to 2 megabits", and that I have never seen more than half that speed. I specifically asked her if I should be happy always getting 50% of the speed listed, and she said yes. I was rather surprised by her candid answer. She DID say that under certain circumstances I might see 2 megabits per second. I asked her under what circumstances I could expect to see that speed, and she could not provide specifics.

I should have said "do those specific circumstances happen to entail me sending you more money each month?" 🙂

I'm starting to think this was all a marketing gimmick, and that there has actually been no change at all in the speed customers are getting. Should we be happy getting half of the "up to" speed all of the time? I guess since I always got the "up to" speed 100% of the time before (when it was 1 megabit per second), I had just assumed I would also do the same now that it is 2 megabits per second, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Was anyone else out there under the old "Internet Lite" (aka the new "Everyday Low Price Internet") plan? Have any of you seen a speed increase lately? Thanks!

I know ISPs only sell "up to" speeds, but assuming your line can handle it, and it's off-peak hours (on cable), then you should be seeing that 2mbit speed. Unless TW is pulling a marketing stunt (read, "lie") of epic proportions. If so, I think that your state's AG, and the FCC would like to hear about it.

If you need more speed, why don't you upgrade to a higher tier service? I know TWC offers higher speeds. 1mb/s is in the DSL category so I know they have higher speeds. Upgrade to a higher tier and then do a speed test and see. Changes to the cable modem profile are usually instant, meaning you call, the tech immediately changes the profile and as your watching it, the modem reboots and voila.

>If you need more speed, why don't you upgrade to a higher tier service?
Because 99.9% of the time, I only WANT it, I don't NEED it. I'm also allergic to recurring bills - I'd much rather have the extra $20-$30 or more each month to spend on food, gas, going to the movies, etc. Also have to pay taxes on each and every dollar of the bill, and I hate taxes even more than recurring bills. Mostly, it comes down to expectations. I read several articles saying that Time Warner was increasing their lowest tier internet speed, from max 1 mbps to 2 mbps. I always got the top advertised speed before. Now, even though I get the same exact speed, it is 50% of the top advertised speed in my tier - unexpected, given my speed test results over the past 2 years. (always getting 100% of the top speed in my tier, every single time)

They may very well be. I guess I could try to put a positive spin on this, and focus on the fact that they just dropped the price down to $15 a month for the same speed I had last month. Maybe they simply haven't completed whatever upgrade that supposedly allows these 2 megabit per second speeds around here.

unless you specifically called in for the upgrade, they may not have changed the speed profile in your account and modem. At least, that's the way it was with verizon. Free upgrade, but you had to call in to get it.

I have a crappy DSL 2mb download speed (60kb/sec) and 512 upload for $100 US. You guys think you have it bad.

Man, I thought this was a necro thread for a second. 1 and 2 Mbit/s speeds . . . . my T-Mobile phone does faster than that on HSPA in weak signal areas. :colbert:

Maybe you should take some of those "guns made america free" over to your TW office & ask them why you cant have your speeeed.......hahaha

Did they not update your account with the new settings, or give you a new modem that would support the higher speeds ?

But seriously, under what ice-age covered rocks are they living anyways ?
Back in 2005, I had TW in SC and got 6-8Mbs service for $45/month.... nowadays I think they are up to around 12-15Mbs IIRC.....

At the speeds we're discussing here (1Mbit), the technologies they are using to provide the connection simply arent great, and aren't reliable. DSL is essentially dial-up 2.0, and for $15 a month you're getting what you pay for. They might have claimed that you will get up to 2Mbps now, but the infrastructure in your immediate area may be oversaturated (happens all the time with cable in places like condo complexes, apartments, trailer parks, etc) or simply inadequate to provide those increased speeds. Remember, Time Warner doesn't give a hoot about your aversion to monthly bills and taxes, and they're certainly not going to bend over backwards to please someone who's only paying them $15 a month.

So you're kinda hosed here, if you're not getting the speeds, you're not *going* to get the speeds no matter how many angry phone calls you make. The only way you're going to get better speeds is to upgrade to a better service either from Time Warner or from a competitor.
