The 'G2' or HTC Magic is supposedly due out this summer. But it's quite a bit different in that it no longer will have a physical keyboard. If that was a feature of the G1 you liked then jump on it now, but first I have a quick Q for you. Have you tried it out? I was pretty interested until I handled one in the store and it seemed quite flimsy and fragile. Especially when it's 'opened' and the keyboard is exposed. It seems like a loose screen could become a problem down the road.

Beat you by seconds, gocorps ;)

My assessment matched your gocorps. When you flip open the keyboard, the phone feels light cheap plastic. It doesn't feel "substantial" enough and the screen has too much "give" on it. That said, I know three people who have had G1's since they released in late Oct 2008 and they haven't had any issues with the sturdiness of the phone.

I like the UI of the G1 though - the whole multi-screen thing along with the "drawers" concept or whatever it's called is slick. The touchscreen seemed responsive - although the gestures in apps like the maps weren't as intuitive as the iPhones IMHO. I've heard the G1's Appstore is getting better. The apps that I saw looked good. Surfing the web on the browser worked very well - although I got tripped up by things that I had gotten used to on the iPhone. I like that it's not made by Apple and that it's fairly easy to modify lower level functionality of the phone (and, yes, I love my iPhone, but Apple's control issues with the iPhone irritate me). The proprietary headphone jack is a minor annoyance. I've heard the battery life isn't great - but to me battery life falls into two camps: charge it every night, and charge it once a week. The latter is obviously much better than the former. I don't quibble over one phone being 9 hours of battery life and another being 14. To me, they are both "charge every night" phones. I like the removeable SD card for memory - I always prefer SD cards to Apple's integrated memory thing. Everyone that I know with a G1 loves their phone - I know three people with them.

Overall, I think the G1 is an excellent choice. But I agree with Gocorps and highly recommend that you spend at least 15 minutes goofing around with the G1 in the store. But I recommend that with any phone.

I read that the Magic would be Vodafone exclusive and not have a keyboard. Given that, I'd rather have the G1.

I've had a G1 since release and and love it, for what its worth.

In the second link above, there's a photo of a Magic with a T-Mobile logo on it. And the logo on the Magic in the photo is not Germany's T-Mobile logo - it's the US T-Mobile logo. That's the source of the Magic => G2 rumors... we'll see.

To me the endorsement of a person who has owned it for a while is worth a lot. So, now I know 4 people who own G1's and love them.

ok, I have one now! Seems like a iPhone with a keypad to me. I am happy so far. Not as intuative as I would like but that is really more likely the number features it has to juggle, not a poor ability to juggle.

Q for Deeko: does the G1 sync properly with outlook yet? I heard early reports that it didn't, which would be a real breaker for me as that's how all my contacts are stored.

I believe there are apps in the market that do it fine - in fact I read that there is even a near full-fledged Exchange app on there now. I honestly haven't tried it though - I use gmail for all of my personal email/contacts/calendar, and I have a work-sponsored data-only Blackberry for exchange at work.

Apps I would recommend from the market:

Craigslist - um, craigslist
DroidSans Tweak Lite - UI tweak - wipe transitions between screens
Exact Call Log - exact call log (the built in one says "4 days ago", not March 7 4:33)
Hello AIM! - AIM program, nicer than built in
My Tracks - uses GPS to track running/walking/whatever
Opera Mini - browser, I like the interface better on the default, but Opera is faster
PhoneFlix - update your netflix queue
Quote Pro - stock quotes/info
Ringdroid - make clips from songs
Scoreboard - updates you on sports scores
Shazam - listens to music thats playing, tells you what song it is
ShopSavvy - scan a barcode, it tells you the price of it at other stores
ChompSMS - better UI for text messaging, also has an on screen keyboard
SMS Backup - emails your text messages to the address of your choice
SMS Popup - get a popup when you receive a text message, similar to iphone (a little nicer)
The Weather Channel - weather, i like it better than weatherbug/accuweather
ToggleBlu - turn on/off bluetooth
ToggleGPS - turn on/off GPS
ToggleWifi - turn on/off wifi
Twidroid - twitter
Good grief, what do they all do?

Wow, these are really cool!

Ok, now for the dumb questions:
If I don't own a bluetool, shouldn't I turn off Bluetooth all the time?
Do I need that app to turn it off?

Is the GPS on or off automatically with apps using it?

WiFi- um? So, Does this only turn on when I need it for web browsing, or not?

-Yes, you should keep bluetooth off if you aren't using it. You don't need the app to do it, its in the settings, the app is just easier as a shortcut if you do it frequently
-I believe GPS is on by default. If you turn it off (via either settings or toggleGPS) it will make a best effort to guess where you are based on the tower
-WIFI will always be on and either connected or scanning if you have it enabled. Things like gmail sync still use the connection, its not just browsing

So, I save battery life if I turn it off?

get the togglewifi app. it puts a notification in the bar if wifi is enabled but not connected / wasting battery life. i have shortcuts to all the toggle apps on a home screen, and just turn on wifi right before i need to do some intense browsing.

also, get "locale" it lets you customize your phones status (ringers, wifi, bt, gps, screen brightness) based on your location. so, you can have it automatically silence itself whenever you go to work etc. pretty cool

(i just got mine 3 days back :D)

also, i've noticed that if the phone is sleeping, and wifi is enabled, it will sleep the wifi connection while the phone is sleeping. pressing a key, i notice that it quickly reconnects when i wake the phone up

My office asked me to investigate and do a writeup of this situation in the company's blog. Here it is reposted on my personal site:

Microsoft Exchange (with ActiveSync) support arrives for T-Mobile G1

As I began to explore the inroads on Exchange support for the Google Android OS via various web forums, a solution emerged: NitroDesk?s TouchDown For Android and Exchange.

For starters, let me allow the people at NitroDesk to make their introduction in their own words:

TouchDown lets you access your corporate Email, Contacts and Calendar right from your Android-powered phone. Works with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003/2007 SP1 and with most online Exchange hosting providers.

With TouchDown, your office email, calendar and contacts are available right at your fingertips. You can choose how long to retain your email on your phone. You can choose to download ALL your Exchange contacts to TouchDown any time you want, but get all changes automatically every time you check your email.

You get quick access to your day?s agenda, optimized for viewing on your phone. You can choose to dismiss past events to simplify the view.

NitroDesk offers two flavours of TouchDown:

1. A free version, whose limitations are an Inbox-only view of e-mail with a history of one day, and read-only access to your contacts and calendar. You can download and install this version by searching for ?touchdown? in the Android Market.
2. A paid version of the software, which costs $29.99 USD. This version gives you access to all of e-mail folders with a message history of as long as you?d like, full read/write access to your contacts and calendar items, and as of this writing, push e-mail via ActiveSync in the 2.0.000 preview copy of the software.

Shortly thereafter I was also contacted by someone at Wrike Inc. about their product, ContactsCalendarSync, which does what the product name implies.

I have am iPhone & a G1, I'm sticking with the G1, and when the Magic is released, I'll get one of those.

I still hate Apple, although I own their stock :)
