When does "spanking" a child become abuse.

Which of the following is abuse in your mind. Lets say this is an 11 year old child.
The child did something real bad to deserve punishment.

1. Spanking on the hands.

2. Having the child hold out two buckets of water for hours. (The child must keep the arms out straight)

3. Slap to the face

4. Ruler to the hands, legs, or ass

5. Metalic fly swatter handle (the handle is metal) to the hands, legs, or ass

6. Metal coat hanger to the hands, legs, or ass

7. Broom to the legs or ass

8. PVC pipe to the legs or ass.

9. Stomping with boots on.

Which of these would you call the police if you knew a parent was doing as punishment?

Anything but barehand and anywhere but to the hand or ass.

Even then, I'm not really for it. Ya, the child fears it now, but it feels more like taking your own agression out on the kid. To each their own though.

I would at least call child services and let them figure it out. If it was leaving marks, then in my opinion it would be too much force.

Most of your examples would qualify as abuse today.

I actually know parents who used each one of these punishment before, with the exception being the stomping with boots.

Excellent, then 2. Having the child hold out two buckets of water for hours. (The child must keep the arms out straight) isn't abuse since it leaves no marks. I have experienced it before, and I would rather be hit with a broom that leaves a bruse.

Water torture and sleep deprivation doesn't leave marks either, but are torture.

I mean I will smack my kids butts or if they aren't listening I will give a little pressure on the muscle that is on the side of their neck to get their attention, but spanking is always a last resort.

There are usually other ways that I can get my message across (no desert, grounding, no video games, loss of toys) that I rarely have to use physical punishment.

I can't believe anybody would make their kid hold water buckets like that today.

U.S,

She was bed ridden for days since it was to painful to walk. Then for another week or two she had long clothes on. In the end few people knew what happen.

Same here. Frick, even a a pebble in your hands for hours is tough.

My mom would use wooden spoons and sometimes her brush. Never anything metal. She never had me go get a switch from a tree either.

The only thing I may think about calling the police about is #9. Everything is okay as long as it's done in moderation. Most of a punishment is physiological I think anyway.

I know that when I would get in trouble the biggest part of the punishment for me was sent to a room to "wait for them to figure out how many swats I was getting". Wondering how many I would get would make me never want to do whatever I did again. Most I ever remember getting was 5 in a row. Sometimes they would just have me wait in there for probably 5 minutes (but it seemed like forever) just to tell me they decided not to give me a swat, BUT if I EVER did that again they would double it. lol.

and I never, ever felt like my parents abused me or were taking their aggressions out on me. In fact, if one parent was pissed off, the other did it. Actually, come to think of it, one decided the punishment and the other gave it that way if one of them was mad the one giving it wasn't. My dad was usually the softy and told us to fake cry sometimes and wouldn't swat us =P

Uh... ok, was this PVC pipe filled with cement or something? PVC pipe wouldn't leave someone bedridden for days.

Back in the stone ages teachers had paddles that looked like Cricket Bats with holes drilled in them to make them less wind resistant and they were usually emblazoned with witty names like, "The Board of Education."

I got my only swat in sixth grade when some of my friends and I flew about 400 paper airplanes out of the third story window of the school when we had a sub and she was out of the room half the day.

<---51 yrs. old

My parents once caught me stealing rubber bands out of my sister's house and I got a belt (the only time) I was maybe 8 or 9.

I actually think you could draw blood with a coat hanger or a fly swatter and don't think a broom or a piece of PVC would even bruise a kid.

I don't know, I never hit my kids with any thing more than my hand on there bare ass.
