When does one use ? or ® in a thesis paper?

So I am writing my thesis right now, but I cannot figure out how often to use ? or ® when referencing things that are registered or trademarked. I have been told:

1. Only the first time they are mentioned in the thesis

2. The first time they are mentioned in each chapter

3. Everytime it is referenced

Does anyone know?

Don't know if there are special rules for thesis papers, but here is what the International Trademark Association says about it.

Thank you. That was what I was looking for. I'll bring it up to my advisor and see what he says.

I wouldn't even bother to include either. Unless the advisor suggests otherwise.

You might also consult a good librarian.

I've typically heard and seen that the first (obvious) instance is when they should be used. After that, there is no need to repeat them.

Ahhh, my days at GMI...

I believe you should reference it the first time, and then you're okay.

yellowfiero knows the drill. If I use it improperly, they will reject my thesis and i'll have to fix it :brokenheart:
