Ask Putin. He seems to have written the book on this tactic.
A) Bomb the shit out of Syria and create a humanitarian crisis >> more refugees
B) Roll out the welcome mat for Taliban leaders (after allegedly offering bounties for dead US troops) and covertly send them weapons and munitions >> As the Taliban gains ground and conflict escalates, expect more refugees
C) The latest move—have your embattled stooge in Belarus offer visa-free entry to 90+ countries…including Iraq…while no longer manning checkpoints along the border with EU member Lithuania. In fact, fuck it, fly those migrants free of charge to the border (after seizing their passports so they can’t be sent home) to stick it in the EU’s face over sanctions >> More refugees incoming https://apnews.com/article/middle-e...style-europe-92d38ceabf97e160180e8526008297e0
Why does Putin think an EU refugee crisis helps him? Hmm, I dunno, maybe because:
- It weakens border security for former Soviet/communist states that fled Russian influence for the EU
- It creates in-fighting amongst EU members over who will take in more migrants, dividing the bloc
- It promotes the rise of right wing nationalist/fascist parties and personalities in member states (parties more likely to be friendly with Moscow and anti-EU)
- It drains resources that might otherwise be allocated for EU defense against Russian aggression
Now if this strategy works so well in Europe, who’s to say that Putin or other foreign adversaries won’t try the same thing here?
I’m not saying there aren’t other causes—political or economic instability, gang violence, climate change, human trafficking etc. I’m just saying we need to watch out for state actors making a crisis even worse.
