When does a premium domain name lose premium status?

So I finally thought of a wicked name for a website I want to create but godaddy wants me to pay $2000 because it's a "premium" name even though the site is not, nor has it ever been, used. I thought of a hundred other similar names and they are all $9.99 but just didn't sound as good.
So my question is when does a name lose its premium status?
Surely it must be a computer making these decisions.
**$$#!#@% godaddy anyway $#!#$% ripoff.

My google search on the topic revealed just that. Looks like the prospectors are at it again.

If GoDaddy owns the domain they can charge whatever they want for it. Best bet is just get an unregged domain, preferably not from terrible companies like GoDaddy.

Indeed. It's not that GoDaddy buys them persay, but they offer a service where you let them handle the domain and they can instantly sell it for you, in cases like the above.

You're thinking of "domain tasting" where'd you search for a domain and the company you searched through would register it and try to gouge you. ICANN fixed that.

Yeah a cyber squatter/actual name registrar has been holding a name I wanted for 6 years.

They said they would sell it for 8 grand and I counter offered with 8 bucks. They have yet to do anything with it

The site I want is RonPaulRepublic.com. You'd think that now that he is no longer running for president they would let it go cheap. I mean really the man just turned 73. What are the odds he'll run for president again?

If a domain name expires and it is registered through godaddy>>> they will keep it and put it up for auction. It happened to me when my domain name I used for my family website expired. They wanted me to wait 90 days or cough up $70 (not a popular name). No one bid on it so I got it back after 90 days. Lames asses. Use someone else.
