When Do You Respond to E-Mails?

This is more for those who work full-time, but when do you respond to e-mails?

I get so sick of work or college-admin related e-mails going unanswered until days later. Is it not logical to respond to all unanswered e-mails at the end of the day? Not doing so, especially for salaried employees, is completely ridiculous, not to mention unprofessional.

Am I wrong here?

Lame... I thought this was going to be something like "YAGT: How long til I call her?"

😛

And no, you're not wrong.

Depends on who sent it. If it's my boss, right away. Somebody else, a week. I got like 300 unread emails dating back to May.

You are so popular! 😉

Concerning e-mails, I get them all sent to my Blackberry. Of course, if it is personal it can wait a little bit longer but if it is business or urgent, I reply ASAP. I would say at the end of the day I try to reply back to 95% of e-mails, of course depending on time and how long i've been doing them.

I reply as soon as I read it... I figure it's already up, fresh in my mind... just hit reply and give them an answer... not a huge deal.

I can't stand getting an email back 2-3 days later either... I've already got my information somewhere else by that time.

When I get them and have the time. I generally read them within minutes, but the response varies over the amount of work or typing I need to do and what I am currently doing. Just because you send me an email doesn't mean I will respond within minutes.

I had a professor that anytime you e-mail him, he would respond within 10 minutes with a freakin' novel. It was amazing. If I e-mailed him a question a 3 AM, I would get a response by 3:10 guaranteed.

As far as my habits, it depends how busy I am, and how important it is.

"When responding to trivial e-mail from bothersome people becomes a priority", for $200, Alex?

Depends on who it is from, and what it concerns. I usually address all of my e-mail within minutes of receiving it, but there are some messages from May that I still haven't taken care of... there are many things that have a higher priority than most email correspondance (at least as it exists right now, at my job).

Yeah, I drop everything I'm doing no matter what just to answer some whiny co-worker's email.

Ha! If I don't get back to you, tough. I'm insanely busy.
