When do you breathe doing situps/pushups

I just did some pushups and I was trying to figure out the best way to breathe. I ended up having to catch my breath. So, when/how do you breathe when doing pushups/situps?

Always exhale when you are doing the actual excertion. When actully pushing up or sitting up.
